Sony Ericsson W900i

Introduction

The Sony Ericsson W900i is one of the top end phones in today's market. It was released the 12th of December 2005 on the Vodafone network, but has mostly been available as a contract phone since then. The average price for a W900i can range from about £300 to £500 brand new, although the price will start to decrease soon as many competitor companies are releasing phones that finally challenge it.

I personally received this phone for my birthday with a 2gb memory card and earphones after requesting it months before. I am still satisfied with it.

Looks

The W900i is one of the few swivel action phones, which basically mean it is made of two halves, of which one which revolves 180 degrees to lock into place to reveal the full length phone. This phone is available in two colours; black & white, both of which look amazing. The phone can also be unextended, and can be used very easily as a camera, where a button at the top can be used to take pictures, which many of us are familiar with as this seems identical to cameras themselves. The phone is 109 x 24 x 49 millimetres which in terms to some phones is quite big.

In my own opinion I would say the swivel action is not exaggerated in any way and in fact is one of the main attractions of the phone. In terms of colour I prefer the white, it seems to be a much more attractive colour and goes with the sub-colour orange very well. One problem I did find is that the connection port at the bottom (where you insert charger/earphones) is amazingly loose and so the earphones can easily fall out (which can be annoying in public when you music comes through the phone speaker). I personally don't have a problem with this phones twice but many peoples first comments about it is referring to the size.

The screen has a resolution of 240x320 pixels. It is also quite small which means the picture is very defined and high quality. I love the screen size as it can hold a lot of detail and makes the images clear. It supports 262,000 different colours.

Specification

The full phone specification can be seen on the Sony Ericsson website:

Basically it has an amazing 2 megapixel camera with autofocus, digital zoom, photo light and video recording. The quality of the pictures is amazing and can easily be mistaken with those taken with an actual camera. I found the autofocus very useful as i don't have a steady hand when taken pictures, but even if you move as you take it, the picture comes out clear. The photo light is very useful as it not only lets you take pictures at night, you can also use it as a torch (it's very bright). I was disappointed with the digital zoom because basically it just makes the pixels bigger to zoom in, this means the more you zoom in the more quality it loses (although it can zoom in amazingly far).

The W900i is the first Sony Ericsson phone to feature a graphics chip. It features an internal NVIDIA GoForce 4800 Graphics Processor which means it is capable of playing 3D games. At the moment they are not many phones that can play 3D games so its hard to find them. I have however played some and I think they are totally amazing especially compared the rubbish sold at extortionately high prices to the older mobiles.

This is one of the now many 3G phones and supports video calling. I have never used this feature and plan never to, as it is very expensive. It just means it has a second camera on the front of the phone so you can see someone with a 3G handset, as you talk.

One of the phones main features is music and I can see why. The phone has clear sound, a media player, supports PlayNow (I have never used it) and has MegaBass. More detail can be seen in the Walkman section.

This phone has Bluetooth and Infrared which I'm very happy with because it allows me to share files with people without one. It also has dial-up modem support which I think means you can connect to internet using it (but this is very expensive). It can also be used as a mass storage device which i will describe later.

As a quick mention this phone supports wallpaper animation which means you can use a moving picture as a wallpaper and it will still move in the background. I generally don't use this is it appears to lag.

This phone does let you access the internet using the NetFront browser but I have never went on the internet due to previous experiences of slow speed and high cost. It is a tri-band (didn't know where else to put it in).

This phone doesn't really differ from others on messaging, it supports email (never used), MMS (never used), predictive text (saves much time), SMS and sound recording which is new to me (replying with a voice message).

The list of features is amazing I think. The phone has: alarm clock, calculator, calender, notes, light, stopwatch, timer and tasks. Each is self explanatory really but are each helpful at times. It also can play radio if you have the HPM-80 earphones.

Memory

The phone comes with about half a gigabyte of internal memory, where 477mb is available to us. It also supports Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO duo (found in PSP's) of memory up to 2gb. Now in terms of pictures, if we take the average picture size as 75kb, it can store 6500 pictures without a memory card. In terms of music, of we take the average audio size as 3.5mb, it can store 136 songs without a memory card. Videos are a bit harder to estimate as they can vary a lot in size and quality. If you was to have the 2gb Memory Stick Pro Duo you could hold 4 times the amount of the internal memory. This is one of the phones you can store and play converted DVD's on.

Now I thought this belongs in the memory section more than anywhere else, but you may have seen this phone labelled as a mass storage device. This basically means when it is connected to a pc by the USB lead, it should be seen as a memory stick and allow quick file transfer. This is sorter true but it needs a driver to be installed on the PC before. This can be a problem if you are travelling elsewhere and don't carry the Sony Ericsson W990i Software Suite disk with you at all times. Personally i like the fact it's recognized as a removable disk; it is convenient.

At the moment I have 200 songs on my memory card, 3 music videos and a couple of pictures. I have used 1gb out of my possible 2.5gb of both phone and memory card memory, so in terms of memory i am very satisfied.

Walkman

The W900i is one of the Sony Ericsson Walkman phones. This means it has an application on the phone that acts as a media player and for organizing music (this has the same concept as iTunes for the pc). The Walkman feature enables you to minimize music; meaning you can listen to music whilst using the phone and even playing games, an in built EQ with MegaBass; which enables you to alter the frequency balance of your music (make the bass louder) and it can organize music by artist, track or in a custom playlist.

I find the Walkman feature very useful as I listen to a lot of music. I currently have 200 songs in my music library but you do have to rename the songs properly for them to display. The one setback to using the Walkman is that it drains the battery life drastically and if too much is being down at once, it can make the music pause for about one second a time.

It can play many audio files including: MP3 (most popular audio format), WMA (windows media audio), AAC (advanced audio coder), WAV (waveform audio) and MIDI (polyphonic). So basically it supports every format you need.

Conclusion

In conclusion I'd say this is definitely the phone for you if you have no budget and are interested in music and looks. If you are after a phone with many features this is also good for you, but if you are after a simplistic, cheap purchase this is not for you. Also if size is an issue be prepared as this phone is bigger than most phones.
