Although the product isn't released until 30th September 2008, I have had the pleasure to use one of the pre-production models for around two weeks. Whilst there are improvements on the launch model, I am confident that the pre-production model has given me an insight in to what to expect from this handset.
The X1 is the first, and possibly the last Sony Ericsson handset to use the Windows as an operating system. It uses Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. Sony Ericsson have not yet commented on whether the handset can be upgraded to Windows Mobile 7, however it doesn't seem they plan to release any further Windows based handsets.
I've noticed quite a few mobiles/PDAs where the keyboard slides out sideways, and in that aspect the X1 doens't seem too different. However, it employs an 'Arc Slider' design, meaning the sliding process is somewhat 'curved'. It really does add a unique aspect to the design, and sets it apart from the other handsets that have the same sliding keyboard design. The opening and closing of the handset feels smooth, and it is also spring assisted.
The handset comes in a choice of silver or black. However, both of these are metal, which really gives the handset a robust and well designed feel.
The phone used a MiniUSB for charging and data connection, which is also a first in Sony Ericsson handsets.
The
screen on this handset is amazing. It has an 800x480 W(Wide)VGA screen. The handset only has 65k colours, as opposed to a lot of other handsets that have 256k. However, you wouldn't know to look at it. The resolution is amazing, and videos are close to DVD quality. The handset is also able to play videos and music in Windows Media format (WMA and WMV). The screen is also a touchscreen, measuring 3 inches.
Internal memory of the handset is only 400MB, which compared to some other handsets of the same standard, could be considered quite low. Some people have tried to compare the X1 to the iPhone. Whilst I'm not going to get into a debate about which is best (although the X1 is the clear winner in my opinion), I will say that the iPhone does come with either 8GB or 16GB memory. However, the X1 is able to accept MicroSD memory cards up to 16GB, and even up to 32GB when these are released by the manufacturers.
Next up, the camera. Again this could have been slightly higher spec based on the fact this is supposed to be a premium handset. The camera is a 3.2 megapixel, which in itself does produce quite good picture quality, not too far from the standard of the 5MP camera on the Nokia N95. The camera doesn't have too many settings, just the basic ones as seen on most of the Sony Ericsson handsets (excluding the K and C series, which often have additional settings for red eye removal, etc). However, one nice function is the 'touch auto-focus'. When looking at the image you are able to take, you can touch an area of the screen which in turn focuses on that part of the image. This can be used to blur out other parts of the picture, which in turn can create some quite professional looking images.
Luckily, there have been some improvements in terms of video recording. Unfortunately, there is no video light. However, the video can now be recorded in 640x480 @30 fps. This is an advancement on the 15 fps recording of most other handsets, even on the K800 camera phone.
The phone comes with Bluetooth version 2, including Bluetooth Audio. This allows you to use Bluetooth headphones and other accessories, allowing you to interface with your device 'wirelessly'.
Now, a unique function of the X1 is the 'Xperia panels' interface. Panels are basically desktops. You can have up to 9 desktops active at once, and are able to switch between these quickly and easily. The X1 comes with some Xperia panels pre-installed. It comes with the following panels:
- Sony Ericsson panel - a panel to read news, weather, finance, world clock and shortcuts to communication and applications.
- Media Experience panel - center for viewing and playing multimedia files.
- Slideshow panel - slideshow of recently taken videos and photos.
- Microsoft Today panel - this panel is the actual Microsoft today screen.
-3D Fish panel - a panel that showcases the 3D features of the phone; a fish tank with 3D fishes.
- FM radio panel - a panel to access your FM radio straight. and - Google panel - provides access to all Google services.
However, Sony Ericsson has announced that they will also be offering other panels for download via their 'Fun and Downloads' section on their website. You can also download these panels straight to the handset using the X1's internet functions.
As the X1 uses Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, you also get the following Microsoft applications:
Outlook Mobile: e-mail, Contacts, Calendar, Tasks
Office Mobile: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote
Utility applications: File Explorer, Pictures & Video, Notes and Calculator
The X1 also comes with YouTube support, and Opera 9.5 web browser.
The X1 is a 3G handset, and also comes with video call function using the front VGA camera. 3G is not the only way to connect to the internet, as the X1 comes with Wi-Fi, which allows you to connect to wireless hotspots and routers.
Also installed on the X1 is the Google Maps application, as well as a trial version of Wayfinger Navigator. Both of these are extremely useful, as the X1 also comes with aGPS (Assisted GPS). I've found this really does lock onto your location very quickly, especially in comparison to the GPS found on the Nokia N series.
There are four main input methods for the X1. The first, and most obvious is the touchscreen. A lot of the controls are large enough to be able to use your thumbs and fingers to control the phone. Although, there are some that are too small to do this. However, not to worry, as the X1 does come with a nice metal stylus for this purpose.
The next obvious input method is the QWERTY keyboard, although most of the phone functions cannot be accessed with the keyboard alone, it does make composing emails and texts very easy. It gives a good feedback, and like the rest of the phone it feels top quality.
Underneath the screen is the next input method -actually both of them. The first being the directional keys (up, down, left, right and select buttons). This can be used to control the phone functions in the same way as you would on a phone with a joystick (such as the K800). However, at the centre of the directional keys, is something a bit clever! It's an 'optical joystick'. You can basically move your finger over this to scroll through the menus and select options. I did have my doubts that this would work well enough to be viable, but it really is very responsive and easy to use.
There have been several speculations about whether the X1 has the auto-rotate function, as found on some of the other latest SE handsets. Unfortunately, it doesn't. The screen can be flipped to landscape mode, but only when sliding out the keyboard. However, the be honest, the large 3 inch screen is usually large enough for most functions, unless you want to view something widescreen, such as a movie.
The battery life is actually quite good, especially considering the size of the screen and the functions available. At full charge, I had to recharge the handset around every other day (every two days). However, this was with Wi-Fi in almost constant use, occassional camera usage, and frequent texting, calls and emailing.
In regards to stability, I've not had one single crash. The handset I had 256MB of ram (the SE P1i has 128MB). However, it has been announced that the production version of the X1 will have over 350MB of ram, which should make it even faster.
As I have not used the phone for too long, I feel there isn't a lot more I can comment on. However, I will say that this is an amazing phone, and looks great. In terms of contracts, at the moment the main networks don't have anything confirmed. There are a few third parties online with awful deal (I.e handset for free requires a 24 month contract, £96 a month, etc). In terms of getting the handset Sim Free, I've seen prices ranging from as high as £584, down to around £499, so it pays to shop around!
