BACKGROUND I was in dismay; smoke was bellowing from my television, as I stood with the remote in my hand. My television had just given up, after only about two years of service - check the review here http://www.ciao.co.uk/Samsung_WS32W8VD__Review_5491720 - my warranty had ran out and it was time for me to get a new one. I looked on the bright side; at least now I would finally be able to get a HD TV I had been hearing so much about.
OVERVIEW After a trip down to my local electronics shop I decided on the Sony FWD-42PV1/S - 42" plasma panel - almost completely on looks alone. I'm a sucker for a pretty device, and this is A PRETTY device. It set me back about £750 including a two-year warranty, but it had a much larger screen than my old TV and since it was also HD I was excited when I brought it home. Admittedly I didn't have anything HD to test on it - but even still the image quality was far superior to my old TV.
USABILITY: This television is very simple to use. I thought my old TV was easy to use, but this one is much better - not to mention it has MANY more features. All I had to do was plug it in and I was off.
LOOKS This TV looks VERY nice; it's a flat panel, which is very slim for its screen size. It quick dominates the room though and becomes a focal point - it will create a lot of conversation with your friends about how it looks. Oh and don't worry - its just slightly big enough to warn off any would be crooks. Here are the dimensions and weigh: Depth: 12.1 cm Height: 63.1 cm Weight: 29 kg Width: 103.3 cm
PICTURE QUALITY This TV picture quality is brilliant, it's HD, though I haven't had any HD content to test on it yet I can already tell its going to look stunning, because even non-HD content looks stunning. Here are its image specs:
Screen Size: 42" Resolution: 852 x 480 Colours: 1.07 Billion Luminance: 500cd/m2 Contrast Ratio: 10,000:1 Video Signal System: NTSC, PAL, SECAM, NTSC4, 43, PAL60, PAL-M, PAL-N Image Retention Protection: Multi-Mode Picture Orbit / Picture Inversion / White Screen / Timers / Power Save /Auto Wide Mode / Smart Fan Technology Dual Option Slot Yes Picture-and-Picture: Yes Picture-in-Picture: Yes Closed Caption Decoder: Yes Color Temperature Control: Discrete Control RGB Picture Modes: Custom(3), Vivid, Standard
SOUND There is no notable "brilliance" about the sound - but there are also no noticeable defects - I probably will invest in some surround sound though. Here are the sound specs:
Audio: Input/Output: RCA (L/R), Input: Stereo Mini x 2 Analog Audio Input(s): RCA (L/R) Analog Video Input(s): RS232C, Control S Speaker Output: 7W x 2 Digital AMP
FEATURES: This TV has many features - it has freeview built-in so there's no need for extra boxes to be sitting around. It also has a pretty cool Picture-in-Picture function, which, while kind of useless is also kind of cool. I also really liked the fact that it has connections for computer; I am able to connect my laptop [http://www.ciao.co.uk/Sony_Vaio_VGN_B1VP__Review_5602402] and play games, which is very cool.
PRICE As I've already said this laptop cost £750, which isn't cheap, but a bargain for this TV.
VERDICT This is definitely a 5 star TV of which I have found no faults so far. To be honest I am starting to think that it was an act of God that my old TV bit the dust as this new one is so much better. I have no regrets whatsoever except for the fact that i did not get this TV sooner.
