the HDR-CX11 (also known as CX12 in other markets) is part of the recent line of high definition (HD) video camcorders from Sony, and now, the only memory card-based camcorder in the lineup.
I played with the idea of switching to HD video recording for almost 2 years now, and kept updating my preference for one model or another while new models where launched.
I finally decided to go for CX11 mainly for the practical value of the storage media - no need to carry DVDs, no moving (and heavier) hard disk inside, no obsolete minidv format - and its size and weight.
I bought my CX11 about two weeks ago and used in several occasions where I could test its capabilities.
it works more than fine.
first of all, it's HD (mpeg4 AVCHD format), which means a great deal of difference when recording your home videos. this unfortunately cannot be described - you can only see the improvement for yourself when you tried it. on the other hand, HD means much bigger files, and of course, larger investment - more powerful processors, ram memory and hard disks in your computer for storage and recording on alternative media, or for editing, if you're thinking of becoming creative - mind you AVCHD editing software doesn't come cheap either.secondly, it's packed with a bundle of clever features. the ones I find particularly interesting are below -
face & smile detection - no need to mention the benefit of this feature. Sony have made a trademark out of it and it just works. great added value if you have kids.
12x optical zoom (and some 150x digital, which is of not much use), optical image stabilizer - meaning closer zoom, better image capture and all optical.
dolby surround zoom microphone - meaning that the mic zooms together with the image and focuses on capturing the sound around the subject.
all sorts of scene modes, including fireworks, beach and snow (imagine that)
quick on button - which is kind of a standby operation, no need to switch camera on and off every time and waste precious time
smooth slow recording - this I like a lot, I filmed my dog while running and it looks wonderful; what it does is that it captures 3 seconds of video at high speed and process it as a 12-second clip in slow motion
control dial in front for exposure, focus and white balance - this if your interested in adjusting these parameters while shooting, without accessing the main menu
battery info dedicated button - tells you instantly on the LCD how much battery you have left
other nice features I would mention -
the bright hi-res LCD
the mini HDMI out plug
the simple yet comprehensive menu
the fact that you can take 7 MPixel photos while recording - although I would not rely on it solely as my digital camera; I also own a Sony DSC H50 and photos do not even remotely compare in quality
some practical information -
battery life with supplied battery - around 100 min at daylight settings
weight ~ 500 grams
price paid ~ 700 euro (including supplied 4Gb memory stick and an extra 16Gb which I bought on top)
things I would complain about?... if I was to be fussy, here we go -
no USB port in camera - you have to use the docking station to connect the camera to the computer; if you don't want to use the docking station or the USB connector, you may try to use a multi card reader and just switch the memory stick directly to the computer without the camera
the touch screen operation a little frustrating - the camera is clearly not designed for people with large hands
recording time limited by the size of memory stick - however, a 16Gb memory stick would give you around 240 minutes of HD video, which is not bad at all
no viewfinder - on one hand, a good thing, while this makes the camera more compact and lighter
no editing software supplied - options on the market are not quite cheap
AVCHD format quite pretentious - you have to download the supplied Picture Motion Browser in order to play files on the computer, as the AVCHD codec must have been installed together with the software (after that, the files played on all media players installed on my computer, including Windows Media Player 10).
that aside, the camera is a beauty and I am very pleased with it. can't wait till March when my baby daughter is born :)
