I spoke to my local Sony Centre as I thought if anyone knows about Sony equipment they should. I told them what my DVD Player is, and my TV, and I was told that the unit I needed to get was the HTK 215 as my DVD player doesn’t have a Dolby 5.1 decoder built in. I recently bought a DVD player and a wide screen TV and I decided that the sound although good could be better for watching DVDs. I had already connected everything so the sound came from my stereo amplifier but there was still something lacking.
I had looked at various ways to get a full surround sound system. I thought about buying one of the surround sound amplifier kits that appear to be designed for computers but having seen some of these systems in PC World I realised that the build quality was somewhat lacking.

I ordered the unit from Unbeatable.co.uk for £276 including delivery. When I got the unit, which arrived the following day I found that the connection for my DVD player was not compatible with the amplifier, which has an optical digital input. After some investigation on the Internet I found a coaxial to optical converter at £20 from Maplin Electronics. I bought the unit fitted it and played a Dolby 5.1 DVD, Vertical Limit. The sound from this was truly amazing I felt as though I was right in the action.
The unit comes with five satellite speakers and a sub woofer set up is easy all the speaker cables are colour coded and all the inputs on the rear of the unit are clearly marked. To get the best sound out of the system you need to locate your speakers in specific locations in the room. Ideally you need speaker stands once again Maplin Electronics seem to be the cheapest selling wall mounted stands at £12 a pair the same stands in B&Q cost £20 and a pair of Sony stands are £25 plus. You need to get at least two pairs of stands.

It’s important that nothing is placed on top of the amplifier, as it will reduce the cooling effiency of the amplifier thereby reducing its life. I’ve placed mine vertically under the TV on the supplied Stand. Sighting the subwoofer speaker can be a problem as it is fairly bulky and it requires a power supply.
As with most units today this comes with a remote control, which can also be used to control other Sony products including DVD player, TV, and Video.
