Advantages: completely automatic when coupled to the E series Olympus, two batteries, very adaptable Disadvantages: Can be slow to recharge when using nimh batteries
above the lens when not in use.
Although its relatively quick to recharge, it does work better with normal batteries rather than ni-mh. It has a guide number of 36 (20 for wide angle) and seems to reach the extremes quite well.
The digital display on the back of the unit is controlled by a couple of buttons and a thumb wheel and once you have read some of the massive handbook for the flash (little flash - big book!) you'll be able to decide how much or how little control you want or need.
A great flash to accompany one of the best Digital SLR's on the market. ...
Advantages: Excellent range, ease of use, full integration with EOS digital cameras Disadvantages: Battery compartment hard to open and close.
I bought the 580EX after reading some good reviews about it. I still had my doubts, after all, it's only an on-camera flash! Well, the truth is, my flash photography has never been so good and accurate!
OUT OF THE BOX
In the box you get the flash head, a pouch, a manual and a stand for the flash. All is neatly packaged.
FIRST TEST

The start up charge is very fast, in fact one of the fastest I've seen.I fired some shots, head on, all in automatic mode. The recycling times were also excellent (even better if you use the external battery pack). The exposure was very accurate, colours were accurate but the results were very "flashey". I expected this, after all it's a small source of light.
SECOND TEST
I then ...
Advantages: Sophisticated Flash Technology Disadvantages: Perhaps too sophisticated for many
place after you've taken a picture. There is no whining noise as the batteries recharge. It is important to mention though that the flash is noisy on occasion because it comprises a zoom flash head that makes a bit if a buzz every time you use it.
In conclusion I would say this is a petty advanced flash unit that gives excellent results. It might be a bit too confusing if you're as beginner and it's not exactly on the cheap side. However, for those wanting to move up a grade, this flash should light up the way.
