The ==Sony Handycam SR35== is a HardDrive camcorder meaning all your video footage is saved to a hard disk inside the camera, as opposed to a DVD or tape. In this case you get 30GB of storage space giving you around 5 hours recording time in High quality.
Let's go through the camera's features.
DESIGN
The sr35 is incredibly compact and lightweight and is a absolute present from heaven if you are coming from recording on mini DVDs. The screen is crisp and sharp but can be difficult to use in bright sunlight due to glare. Also, with no viewfinder it can make it virtually impossible to shoot video in some well lit situations (eg, beaches)
It is easily rectified by adjusting your position or tilting the screen accordingly.
Another feature that I love is the built in lens cap. The lens cap is activated by sliding a switch on the underside of the lens area- meaning you won't lose the lens cap and it saves you time.
All your essential buttons (record, zoom in/out and on/off) are all well located. The record button sits neatly under your thumb along with the on/off switch. The zoom stick is also easily accessible, sitting underneath your index finger.
The camera also sports a Memory Stick ProDuo slot as well, allowing you to save pictures and videos to it.
SOFTWARE
The sr35's software is very easy to use and quick to start up. Thanks to the hard drive, there are no more 'disk access' screens that leave you waiting for minutes on end before you can shoot. From complete off to recording takes less than 4 seconds, making it a very reliable camera to have on hand.
There is also a built in 'easy mode' which removes all clutter from your recording screen, to make it even simpler to record movies.
The playback features are also very impressive. The camera sports some nifty face recognition software allowing you to search your videos by face. Very similar to Apple's faces software in their iLife 09 suite.
Also there are the usual array of standard video tweaking options such as exposure, white balance etc.
Let me make it clear, that if you are into serious video work and need an easy to use manual focus, you need to look somewhere else as the manual focus is an absolute nightmare to use.
VIDEO QUALITY
If you connect the sr35 straight to a TV using the provided cable, you will be happy with the picture quliaty provided. However, if, like me, you want to transfer these videos to your computer, then you will be disappointed at the results.
Don't get me wrong, the image quality is fine, but when viewed on a computer (in my case a 24" iMac and 13.5" Macbook) you do see the limits of the standard definition quality.
The auto focus will also struggle in low light situations, so bear that in mind when thinking about this camera.
SOUND QUALITY
Sound quality is decent, and perfect for all but the most pernickety users- such as myself. Since there is no Mic. jack, there are no other options with this one unfortunately.
TRANSFERRING VIDEOS TO COMPUTER
This is a process that required a little bit of computer skill. I cannot comment on the camera's playback on Windows machines as I do not own a PC, however, I do believe Sony provide software in the box for playback and editing, but it is on Windows only.
For the Mac users, download and install VLC player (google it), and that program will play the movie files back. To get to the movies, connect the camera to your computer using the provided USB. Double click on the camera's disk icon and go to MP_ROOT, and double click on the folder inside that.
PHOTO QUALITY
The camera supports a very basic photo capture function, that as you expect from a video camera, is very, very poor quality. This will not replace you standard compact camera, and certainly not an SLR, but is fine for a quick capture here and there if carrying a photo camera as well is too much.
CONCLUSION
This is such a quick and slick camera, it will want you to take more videos with it. Yes, the auto focus is slow, but ti does get it right... eventually. I think if you are primarily shooting in well lite situations like in your home, or outside, you are going to be thrilled with the results. Battery life is pretty good as well, with a useful 'quick on' mode which puts the camera to sleep, ready to be switched on instantly.
It is a little bit expensive at about £380, but is well worth the money.

My Dad purchased this camera last week. Its very easy to use, it also has a switch for nightshot mode which allows one to capture whats going on in the dark. The 800,000 pixel resolution is equivelent to the quality of standard dv cameras. Which is pretty good. If you don't want to spend too much on a camera this is the one you should go for. I purchased the similar SR33E which seems to have been sold only By Currys, and since purchase have never been able to use it as the battery drains within 1-2 weeks. I returned it to the store and it was sent off for repair but came back with exactly the same fault. I took it back to the store again and was told that "as it has already been repaired, perhaps the company will not accept it for repair again, and despite ... ...written off as it was still faulty after 28 days, the store refused, and further complints to Currys head office have been totally ignored. It is now over 2 weeks since I went back to the store and Currys have neither sorted out the problem or my complaint about how it is being dealt with. I am extremely disappointedwith the camcorder , as on occasions when we have been able to use it plugged inot the mains the picture quality etc has been excellent, ...
