This digital camcorder gives briliant images with clear sound all of the times. For the expert there are numerous advanced features but for those who just want a 'point and shoot' camcorder with some nice additional functions, this is a great model.
With a zoom up to 40x it can focus in incredible detail, though at higher levels, it needs to be on a fixed base or the picture will wave all over the place.
The snapshot button makes it a great substitute as a digital camera, recording an image for 5 seconds on to the digital-8 tape.
Although it will operate in long play mode to double the tape capacity, for quality images I've found that standard play is better.
The ease with which I can transfer the video to my computer for processing and saving on to DVD or CD using the USB or Firewire (IEE 1394) connection makes it ideal for beginners or experts alike. Microsoft MovieMaker program enables you to automatically transfer the video with just a few clicks of the mouse, automatically splitting separate scenes and photographs in to separate sections.
On the whole it has been fun to use and I am sure there is a great deal more functionality I could get from it to enhance my experience. The only minor drawback is the weight - about half a kg - which can feel like half a ton after a while ;-) but it's worth it for the quality.
I purchased the camera secondhand and a web search shows it is still available for around £250 - in my opinion excellent value considering the features and quality.

Digital brilliance that really goes anywhere. Sony's Digital8 uses exactly the same compression and editing protocol as DV, making the commonly available and familiar 8mm format compatible with digital technology. Your 8mm tapes can now become storage media for what is the future of audio/video: Digital. The DCR-TRV140E also comes with a 20x optical (560x digital) zoom, Super SteadyShot image stabilization and USB video streaming, allowing you to film in fantastic Sony digital quality.
