With a holiday to Florida looming I was torn between buying a small but cheaper range non HD camera or to take the plunge and go for an affordable HD range option. With technology always moving forward I went for the HD with the Sony Handycam HDR-CX105E. I was not disappointed.
The CX105E came with 8GB of flash memory which was totally inadequate for HD so prepare to add another £30 - £40 to the budget for a 32GB Card.
The small pocket size was a great appeal and fitted snuggly into a waist pouch attached to a belt for ease of carrying. No more shoulder bags needed to carry my old brick of a cam corder and 8 mm tapes. The unit itself fits well into the hand and feels robust. It looks great and as I stood in the Disney lines I noticed a number of people looking at it and comparing it to their own with some envy.
The Steady Shot image stabilization and 10x optical zoom was an important consideration and produced some great long distance scene shots (Often from the top of roller coasters). Many entry level HD Cameras didn’t seem to live up to this standard.
The features were clear and easy to understand and I didn’t have to make too many references to the manual.
The one issue for buyers to be aware of when upgrading to 1920x1090i HD recording in AVCHD format, you are going to need the computer to match. My laptop was insufficient to cope with the editing and had to use fairly high powered desk top. Still, that’s technological progress for you.
Given the choice I would have purchased this again. The picture quality is excellent and I was also impressed by the clarity in the low light.
Overall a considered 8/10.

This time, Sony has launched another unfeasibly small HD camcorder. HDR-factor CX105E have a more conventional form, but still impressive dimensioned. The CX105E greater than the TG3. Although only 40g heavier, the chassis is almost two times as thick. However, the sub-300g weight can hardly be described as fat, and remains one of the smallest 'Full HD' in the market. You just will not be able to slip into a jacket pocket without making your chest ... ...Sony Exmor sensor technology than ClearVid. Exmor placing cable behind the photo diode, theoretically providing more areas can be used and greater sensitivity. The CX105E also incorporate 8GB flash memory. However, this is really just enough to get you started, because it will save hours of footage just above 16Mbits/sec AVCHD data rate. Sony also provides a slot for expansion, but naturally this is a company owned MemoryStick format, which in this ...
