It all started a long time ago when the first TV signal was sent across the UK broadcasting 2 hours of TV in the morning and 2 hours in the evening, mainly news clips and general information services, to one channel in a low definition grey scale on around 4" of screen on a box the size of most sideboards no one believed it would catch on, critics said people preferred cinema and would not enjoy watching at home!
How wrong could they were, step forward in time right to modern day and how television has evolved to screens reaching 100", technology making them as thin as a book, Picture quality it's like looking out of a window, millions and millions of true colours, programs that educate entertain, make us laugh and cry can scare us or make us care, TV really is a part of life and to the point it's taken for granted. Truly without TV life would be a worse place to live.

Sony KDL-40 U 2000, 40 Inch High Definition LCD Television with Free view
This TV costs around £800.00 on average and is available at a majority of online electrical retailers,
I was out and about looking for a TV around town when I could see any bargains or deals and thought I'd wait till I got home and look online and check out Ciao, when before I went home I went to Sainsbury's, There it was stood on the shelf at eye level tempting me with its HD Loop of Blue Planet, look at price tag and Shock! It was on sale £699.97, "I'll take it" I said, "it's the last one before we sell the display" they said, happy I was!
Packaging:
Mine and I'm sure many blokes (or women's) favourite part of buying electronics is getting out of the box, that smell of new electronics mmmm geek!, The TV was Packaged in a large cardboard box, internally packed in polystyrene and plastic bags with a huge plastic shield on the screen, the whole box is very cleverly used to pull and couple of tags and it all folds open leaving one TV stood upright in its glory.
Design & Build Quality:
Gunship grey a sharp square look, around 2" Display Frame and about 5" thick at the deepest point, the bottom is curved with a speaker grill and the front is kept very clean from anything with only the Sony brand logo placed central bottom, the Controls are on top of the TV and are Volume, Channel Menu, Source and Power, The TV Can Stand on Desktop Stand or Be Mounted, the Stand is a small footprint of about 15" x 7" and can be placed on any TV Stand Designed for 40" TV`s, The build is excellent and what you would expect from a brand like Sony with strong casing and quality materials used. The good point of the colour is it will fit with silver or black electronics without being out of place or too prominent or invisible
Setup & Connections:
First things first you can mount this or you can stand it on your really expensive glass TV unit, I chose the unit as mounting involves lifting and purchasing mounting kits and I just wanted it on at this point. So the Desktop stand requires you screw in 4 screws, you WILL need at least 2 people to do this as...
1 The TV is very heavy and 2 The Stand is equally heavy made out of solid metal surrounded with plastic
Once this is done you need to connect it to your gear now this can be done in many ways as the connections on the rear which are facing backwards and not facing down like a lot of new LCD TV`s do now, are 2 x SCART, 1 x Component, 1 x HDMI and 1 x VGA, there is also a composite connection with audio left and right, a PC 3.5mm Audio connector and Audio out, the side of the TV also has 1 x Composite, 1 x S-Video and a Headphone Jack point. I found the connections a little lacking perhaps 2 x component and 2 x HDMI would make me more happy, but I have a digital switch and it doesn't matter to me, but to others it could. So I connect My SKY HD to Switch, MY XBOX 360 to Component, and My Up scaling DVD to my Switch then my Switch the HDMI, My DVD is also a Home Cinema Kit So although I connect digitally to my Home cinema I still connect my analogue inputs to the TV and the TV out to the Home cinema, I Have also Connected My PC`s Second VGA connector to my TV and the 3.5mm Audio Jack, Overall all of that is connected and I have room for more SCART Devices and easy access at the side for my Camcorder or Digital Cam.
And after all that swimming in wires and swearing at the dog trying to pee on the new kit to mark it as his, it's time to push it against the wall and turn the sucker on.
Software/Menus:
Upon Initial Turn on the TV automatically goes into a setup mode which will configure the time date and TV signals for Analogue and Digital Freeview at this point I will say the reception will be poor if you do not have a good aerial and strong signal as I found out, but upon replacing with correct equipment, the TV picked up the full range of Digital and Terrestrial Channels, now here is one thing about Sony TVs that's Great and I believe it on the full range, Non HD TV can look well pretty rubbish on a HD set but Sony use a special noise reduction chip that actually Up scales Non HD to A Near HD Level and although it's not amazing it does better than other very expensive sets available once tuned the TV will auto flick to digital where you can explore its EPG or check the channels there are options to rearrange the channels and adjust the EPG settings, along with the interactive settings, also the TV comes with a CAM Slot on the rear meaning later in 2008/2009 when the mpeg 4 HD Free view transmissions start you can upgrade the TV to receive over the air HD and means you don't need to add a Digital box. The remote uses a source button and you are required to flick between each input, which brings me to the next part the picture.
Picture:
The picture quality of the Sony TV is simply outstanding, offering 40" of pure HD glory supporting 480i, 480p 576i, 576p, 720p and 1080i its not full 1080p HD but quite honestly at 40" you would be hard pushed to see any difference, the TV also supports PC resolutions from 640x480 up to, 1280 x 768 and again work flawlessly with the pc settings on extended or cloned desktops. Now when I got this I had a CRT TV 28" so the jump was big, and by sitting these side by side during installation I could show the Mrs who previously stated she couldn't see any difference what the difference was!,
I put the Simpsons on and using HDMI to HDTV and RGB Scart to CRT, she said "They are yellow" to which I responded "they were before" to which she responded "yeah but it's a real yellow", the CRT SD picture shows how washed out colours were and how fuzzy pictures were, on the HDTV the colours popped out so vibrantly that at that moment there was no going back EVER and that was just on an SD channel,, flicking to SKY ONE HD and that's when it happened that's when myself already convinced of HD realised that until I saw HD properly it just can't be explained how good the picture is, as for my 360 well Bioshock in HD with Dolby Digital Surround Sound is so amazingly great eye candy you just won't go back and all of this is supported by Sony's Bravia Engine which makes HD even better.
Also one feature is PF (Picture Freeze) you can pause the picture on the main screen and display the continuation on a small box that can be positioned anywhere on the screen, PIP does work on PC mode, If you are watching through the VGA you can use PIP to watch the Tuners which is good.
Audio:
I won't go into much detail here because HDTV is better equipped with Dolby Digital 5.1 so investment in a good home cinema is a must, but the TV is very ample no distortion or cracking, very clear and can go very loud it also supports 3D surround and stereo, with audio output you can send your TV audio source to anything with a Left/Right Audio composite connection.
Accessories Provided or Separate:
1 x Remote, AA Batteries, Desktop Stand, Warranty Card, Manual,
Ease of Use:
Everything is simple to use, I have no complaints or moans about using this TV, although I would of like direct source buttons on the remote instead of a source button, but that doesn't make it any harder to use and all menus and software work wonderfully and quick.
Bad Points:
The remote is very basic and feels cheap, I use my harmony remote so not a problem but would of like a better remote, and also the remote IR sensor is rubbish thankfully it's ok with my harmony otherwise you have to stand at 48 degrees to the nearest star while balancing a fishbowl full of sponge cake on your head! Seriously though it's very bad at receiving from the original remote.
Also PIP should have been implemented on normal TV viewing but can only be used with PC mode and makes it quite an Un-useful feature when it could be one of the best, overall the features feel a little lacking, another HDMI port would be nice also.
Features:
32" U-series BRAVIA LCD TV Integrated Digital TV Tuner (also receives analogue) High Performance 1-chip Video Processor 3D Comb Filter Virtual Dolby® Surround Sound BBE ViVa HD3D technology for clear and easily audible sound HD Ready PIP Freeze to Pause Important Scenes on the Spot High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI™) PC Input for use as a PC monitor Compact and Slim Design Non-Reflective coating on TV frames
My Experience:
After using this TV for almost a year now, I am happy the picture and sound present with what I need and using the TV on a regular basis has provided me with no problems or niggles although I am now ready to upgrade to something with more features and a 1080p picture also I think 40" is big but to really benefit from HD 47-50" + would be best and as such I will be looking for 47"+ in my next set, also with using my harmony remote with this TV I have found that there are more buttons than the remote provides and using my harmony has made it even easier to use my TV settings and features.
Overall:
It's a great TV, it has a fantastic picture and ample for HDTV broadcast and gaming, it is missing a decent PIP support and connections are limited but overall I would recommend to anyone as their first HDTV or someone on a budget, although now you can get full HD for a little more, but maybe you could pick this up as a bargain like I did.

Quick review of Sony KDL-40 U 2000
Well - I started off purchasing a KDLD3000, instead of this, although only WXGA, I thought the better blacks and faster screen of the D3000 would be better. Boy was I wrong. I sent back the D3000 and re-ordered the X2000. The pictuer quality is still far superior than I have seen on any other Full HD LCD screen. The EX engine drives bette than the standard Bravia, and as such I have not seen any motion blur that you quite often get with LCD's. It will be superceded this year by Sonys new KDL40HD1080, but improving on near perfection is going to be difficult. They have just dropped the price in readiness, so at 14-1600£ it is areally worthwhile purchase right now. Great TV ...
Advantages: excellent picture and sound quality Disadvantages: can be expensive unless you get a good deal on it
...panasonic LCD tv is amazing. The sony LCD has a much clearer picture with its "Bravia HD engine" which in my opinion made colours that you didnt even know existed pop onto your screen. you can set the mode of colours for your own liking from extra bright down to dull. it has excellent sound quality from its many speakers perfect if your watching a movie as you feel like you have surround sound. the one down side to the tv is the look of it compared ... ...quite plain looking although this may be to other peoples liking!!
i also had a problem receiving the built-it DV3 programmes.i could only receive the BBC channels.if i didnt have sky i would have been very disappointed paying so much money and not receiving the channels meant to be received.
other than that the tv is very easy to use. menus are clearly layed out and it is easy to tune and set up with the help of the easy to read and understand ...

Advantages: HD, 6.2 megapixel, reliable, really really big Disadvantages: none to speak of
Well I'm going to tell you about my experience with the KDL-40 that I bought last month:
Firstly - wow 40 inches! Its really big obviously, so you can do basically any screen-orientated thing without having to squint to see what's going on.
Well I've never really been a plasma fan, but this screen is really quite amazing. It supports EVERYTHING.
Since we're moving into HD in the UK, its quite convenient that the KDL-40 (as I will call it from ... ...didn't know, these are high definition (HD) display modes, capable of amazing picture quality. If you don't get that then all you need to know is having HD is GOOD!
OK, now something else. Something else that means pretty much the same thing though.
This TV is part of the X-Series (ooh, fancy name), and I think this is a new "series" of televisions and this is the only one in it at the moment.
Don't quote me on this, but I think this television ...

Advantages: customer service and sony quality Disadvantages: bit too priecy
...problem was absolutely fantastic.
The Sony KDL-40 U 2000 is quite pricey and not as flash as some, but the quality of the image is quite something else. Personally I'm quite a fan of the planet earth series and to see this in what they call true color, which is as close to nature as its possible to get is quite breathtaking. This is all down to the new BRAVIA ENGINE, pioneering technology in color reproduction.
However be warned, when watching ...

Advantages: Fantastic HD Quality Disadvantages: Selecting AV channels can be a pain
I have a Sony40W2000 and what a superb piece of engineering it is. The picture quality has to be seen to be believed. With the free dvd drive the whole experience is delightful. This is a set that has to be viewed if you are thinking of going large HD TV.
Role on more HD channels sky.
I was unsure wether to spend this kind of money on a LCD Tv but once I switched it on those thoughts dissapeared the picture quality is stunning with an excellent sound and easy to use controls well worth the extra money commpared to cheaper options it also looks the part when its switched off!!
The only niggle I have with it is that you have to scroll through the AV channels which can be bothersome if you miss one and have to go through them again. ...
