The Sony minidisc deck MDS-JE530S has all your minidisc needs for less than £130 and it doesn't look too bad either. The original came in black but now you can get it in silver as well. There are many functions on this deck; all the normal play, stop, record, etc that you would expect plus editing functions for cutting out bits (milliseconds) of tracks, joining tracks together and rearranging tracks on the minidisc. For even more advanced functions ... ...fade in and out operations and even change the input sound level to different levels for different inputs.
Regarding inputs, this can be through coaxial, optical or analogue and recording can be done in both stereo and mono. For even more advanced functions you can change the decibel levels when recording tracks, use fade in and out operations and even change the input sound level to different levels for different inputs.
Regarding inputs, this can be through coaxial, optical or analogue and recording can be done in both stereo and mono. This means great recording quality if your connecting player has coaxial or optical connections. I use my deck a lot for putting my music on my computer onto minidisc and so I require things like fast track naming, good sound syncronising and no noticable sound degrading; all of whihc this deck offers. The track naming can be done via the remote control like texting on a phone or using the dial on the player, either way it is easy to do.
Overall this deck is very easy to use. I have never needed to make use of the manual as all the functions are well named and easily understandable. The functions that are used most often have individual buttons on the face of the player and there is also a left and right speaker sound equalizer so that you can judge whether the sound is being recorded equally to the left and right side. A very useful function is the A-B repeat. This allows you to repeat any part of the minidisc over and over again; not only useful for listening to you favourite bits of songs but also for doing things like checking the track joins and even for working out notes if you like to do things like making guitar tabs.
The playback seems to be good quality for the price, although this obviously depends on what amplifier and speakers you are playing through. The remote control, though rather long is very useful and it even has a decibel control on it. I think you can do just about everything using the remote control that you can on the deck itself. The deck has a headphone jack, which has an individual phone level and things like timers, sleep, repeat and skip are also there. So all in all, especially for such a good price, you couldn't really ask for much more and I've certainly been very pleased with mine.

...on the other 5xx series Sony decks. Adding track titles is much slower, since one button holds 3 letters and the cursor has to be moved after each letter by pressing the search button. This makes up to 4 pressings per letter, which can become annoying if trying to add a long song title. Other than that the remote is OK. Most of the functions can be performed from the remote. If you own Sony CD player, you can control and synchronize the play and ... ...gone for the highly recommended Sony CDP–XE330).
I bought my MiniDisc player for £150, back in 1999, (From SevenOaks Hi-Fi, Ipswich, Suffolk) but that was soon after it had been released, now however, if you can still find this machine, I would say you should be able to pick it up for around £100 – 120, as newer models command the market today. Advantages: Sounds great and very easy to use Disadvantages: It is a bit heavy
I recently purchased a 530, for two main reasons. Firstly they use a 530 in the place that I work and they had proven themselves to be very reliable and secondly because the 530 was over £70 cheaper than the 930 with the only real difference being that you could plug a keyboard into the 930, for editing.
I have had it for a few weeks now and I am sooo in love with it. It is fast, it's editing functions are easy to use. It has features that I wasn't ... ...and the fade feature. I knew they were reliable and hard to break as I work in a radio station and have seen them being bashed around by many a presenter and they still work fine. The remote is nice and light and not too big.
They look great and the jog dial on it makes it very easy to use. For its price I do not think that you could find a better mini disc player on the market. A must buy as far as I am concerned. ...

Advantages: The Sound Qaulity is second to none, and it works very smoothly. Disadvantages: Having to set output levels if using the optical out conenctor.
...receiver. I have always found sony to be my favourite manufactuer, due to their warranty support and the build quality. So I went out to search for the Sony MiniDisc Deck that would suit my needs. It was then that in a local Hi-Fi shop, I spotted the MDS-JE530, this had everything that I needed and much more. The design looks up tp date, and the controls are all layed out very well and are simple to use. The sound quality form this product is excelent, ... ...as with any of my sony purchases. You should but this poduct if you are starting out into the minidisc world and dont want a bottom of range product without splitting your products, or if you already have a minidisc deck then this product will be a great replacement at a very good cost, it couples very well with a sony portable player, meaning you can create high quality recordings, and then take them anywhere. I bought this Sony Minidisc recorder together with a Sony MZE-33 play only portable minidisc player. Using hi-fi separates, I wanted the higher recording quality that comes with the deck rather than using a portable recorder. The sound quality on the deck is great, and it comes with both optical and coaxial digital inputs (the latter being useful if, like me, you have an older CD deck that has only a coaxial digital output). It also has a jog-dial ... ...hunt around (www.richersounds.com are very good!). Sony invented Minidisc, and their Mindisc products are of a very high quality, and have more features than any of their competitors. I would recommend this deck to any casual hi-fi enthusiast who wants to move into the world of digital recording. ...

...socket for Sony's keyboard? Dearer Sony minidisc machines boast this facility, and the keyboard has been available at Richer Sounds for about £65.
If you want high quality recording and playback, versatility, relative simplicity yet with options for nearly everything (recording volume. output volume, easy editing which is just priceless) then for about £150 you just can't go wrong.
