One of my principle reasons for buying this product was its ability to record. Without this feature or a hifi system with which to do the job, you're pretty stuck, as it's quite difficult to get your hands on a premastered minidisc.
When Sony first introduced the minidisc system, they must have expected it to take over from the CD as the principle audio media. However, many artists were slow to take up the oppurtunity to record on minidisc, probably due to the cost and the undeniable fact that some sound quality is lost. As such, these days, the main way to get good use out of it is to put your cd's onto minidisc, providing you with a compact version of your home music library.
With some of the disadvantages put aside, the minidisc player, and indeed this minidisc player is an excellent portable tool. With this model's Longplay functions, several cd albums can be put onto one disc, causing a considerable reduction in the amount of stuff you have to carry around. But the thing I find most useful is the ability to "group" the tracks. This allows you to put several very different albums onto one disc and to browse either between individual tracks or individual "groups" Say for example, you had some red hot chilli peppers on one disc and a bit of Dizzy Rascal at the end - you could skip straight to the dizzy rascal at the touch of a button.
The Minidisc player comes with its own digital optical cable and optical input hole. What many people fail to notice is that you don't actually need a system with digital optical output in order to record music with it. The optical input on the minidisc player doubles up as a 35mm stereo input. This allows you to use the headphone output on any hifi (or even your mate's cd walkman!!) to record. The only disadvantage of this feature is the need to purchase a line with a 35mm jack plug on each end. If you're looking for one, you can get them from maplins for about £1, which is pretty cheap.
The advantage of actually using the digital method, is that if you're copying from a cd, the recorder automatically detects the points at which the cd tracks end. When recording with a normal line, gaps need to be 2 seconds long before the system starts a new track. This is often quite annoying as a new track will start half way through a song if there is a period of silence. Or you'll end up with several songs on one track if the songs are blended together on the cd.
With all the stories which go around about quality reduction, i was quite surprised to find how good songs sounded when I layed them back on this player. You can fiddle with the bass and treble settings and even save two different combinations to make playback more enjoyable.
The stereo headphones which come with it, all though a bit boring looking, provide great stereo sound output. The only annoyance is if you're on the move, as they fall out of your ears quite easily. I would suggest getting some which hold onto the ears, but don't get cheap ones, pay out for sony one's because the sound quality is much better

MiniDisc got screwed by the quick follow-up of MP3 players. Why would anyone bother with MiniDisc when there is MP3? ~John

I used to have a Sony Mzr-900 or something like that (blue one), the head/lens got corrupted, so I went out to find a replacement head/lens and found out it cost more than the minidisc player did!!! since then I've stuck with mp3 Players ^_^
