It was my birthday and to my great surprise and joy I was given a sony MZ-R900.This is a minidisc player. In case you don’t know what a minidisk is, it is a revolutionary invention by Sony.A minidisc is a 2.5" square cartridge with a digital optical disc inside. It is designed for recording music onto and can be recorded over 1 million times without a loss of sounds quality! Most minidiscs can hold 80 minutes of music on them in normal mode.

Anyway back to the minidisc player. The Sony MZ-R900 is available in silver or blue (mine is blue) and will fit in the palm of your hand!It is extremely light too!As soon as I received the minidisc player I ,naturally, wanted to try it out.To my horror an extremely thick manual fell from the box!Luckily the minidisc player was extremely simple to use and understand and soon I was enjoying my new gift.

The sony MZ-R900 can play minidisks as well as recording onto them.It can play MDLP (mini disc long play) and record in MDLP mode. The advantages of MDLP are that you can fit more music onto your minidisk! The MZ-R900 can record in normal mode, LP2 (doubles the length of your minidisc) and LP4 (Quadruples the length of your minidisc). The general problem is that in LP4 the sound quality isn’t as good but I noticed no difference between LP2 and normal mode so this is a great feature! The buttons can be a bit fiddly but you get used to them quite quickly.

In the actual box you get:

1.The minidisc player

2.Pair of sony headphones (the headphones are great but the cord is a little small but the sound you get through them is superb)

3. ‘remote’ (not a true remote but you plug it into the minidisk and plug your headphones into it so when travelling you can leave the actual device in your pocket and fiddle with tracks usinf a slim stick which looks outstanding)

4.Sony rechargeable battery (the battery life is absolutely wonderful! It lasts for 60 hours!)

4.Optical cable (needed to transfer music from your cds to your minidiscs. The optical lead ensures the digital quality.Unfortunately the ratio of recording it 1:1 but it’s a small price to pay for the great quality.)

5. Adaptor (can be used to power the minidisc player from the mains and is essential because it is needed to recharge the battery!)

When you record using the optical lead there really is no drop in sound quality from cd to minidisc. You can also record using an analogue cable but the quality is not as good.Another good feature about minidiscs is the ability to label your tracks! With a few pushes of a button its done!If your hi-fi supports cd text you can also put it on automatically (if your cd has cd text).

You can even transfer music from your PC onto your mindiscs (addition lead required though). The cost of a minidisk is relatively cheap. You can purchase the discs for a pound or under. The MZ-R900 does not have a radio. Some people think this is ‘O so awful’ but I beg to differ! The whole point of a minidisc is sound quality right? Why bother with the cratchings of a radio? Is it really needed? For me it would just add pointless extra weight!

The MZ-R900 is not cheap! It costs about £220 but I assure you it is worth every single penny! This little wonder is worth its weight in gold!

I would recommend this product to anyone!
