One dull Saturday afternoon, I wandered into a Sony Centre and spotted a pocketsize silver box on display. It had this appealing futuristic look, and was so light I hardly noticed that I was holding it. Five minutes later, I was £179 poorer!
The little thingy is Sony MZ-N505, codename Net MD Walkman, or Sony Portable MiniDisc Recorder. MiniDisc was invented by Sony and uses a new compression technology to store digital sound in less space (up to 5 hours playback time in one MiniDisc). It’s very similar to floppy disk; you may record, play or erase any music file, and edit the track names (like filenames). A blank MiniDisc costs around £1.50. The MZ-N505 can record audio files (MP3, WAV and WMA) from PC via a USB cable, or CD audio tracks from a CD player (or CD Rom drive). It comes with a very user-friendly software to handle the recording. The beauty is the transfer speed; the download from PC to MiniDisc via the MD recorder is lightning fast. I have managed to transfer a whole CD album with 20 tracks to a MiniDisc in less than 5 minutes! It can also upload music files from MiniDisc to PC as well.
The MZ-N505 itself weights only 104g (3.7 oz). Obviously its outer case is not made of metal; so, don’t you ever drop it! The case is also available in gold or blue if you fancy some funky colours. There is a small display panel to indicate information such as track names, remaining playing time, etc. The MD player can play up to 20 hours of music on a fully charged battery (size AA) or 56 hours on a LR6 alkaline battery. This high-tech little darling could probably transform noise to music; the stereo sound is so crisp and solid. Just what has Sony done making the sound so good from a tiny box like this?!
The whole package includes:
MD recorder (81 x 28 x 74.5 mm) In-ear stereo headphones with remote controller Carrying case with belt clip Rechargeable battery AC power adaptor (for charging battery) USB cable Digital cord (for recording from CD player, etc) PC software on CD Rom
I have learned that MZ-N505 is being sold cheaper in the USA ($149 I heard!). The problem is the American AC power adaptor would not be usable in the UK. I have seen MZ-N505 also on sale in Dixons, Argos and online electronics shops. There is, however, little difference in the price.
