The first thing you notice about this MP3 is how heavy it is, its great. I can have this monster in my pocket and feel safe in the knoledge that if it falls out or I leave it somwhere, I will know.......Instantly.
About 1/100th of a second later, you notice that you are holding a brick, wrapped in silk. The satin finnish of the all metal case is so smooth and tactile that i havent had to stroke my cat for weeks.
I have always been a fan of sony, for their ability to make things that are both simple and perfect. Like all simple things, this has very little to go wrong........i have had four MP3 players in the last 3 years........all of them, very quickly developing faults, glitches or just plain breaking. I have had this MP3 for around 6 months and so far........nothing. I have lost count of the ammount of times i have dropped this machine, on concrete, on tarmac and on wooden floors and as i hold it in my hand now it now (mmmmm smooth) i cant actually find a scratch. When the apocalyps comes, there will be only the NW-HD5.......because it will have eaten all the roaches.
Its PC link is (like my review) over reactive.......you actually have to click a box for it NOT to Hunt down and copy/download EVERY piece of music on you computer. Not that the 20GB Memory couldnt handle that much music if you wanted it to do that. Tranfer times are quick, and like others will store the music, as if on an album, by artist, and sort this alphebetically. The interface on the PC is simple, with a flashy fluid design that will have you finding ur most obcure tunes in seconds
The sound quality is great and if you buy one, the first thing i suggest you lean how to use, is the EQ settings......because the factory setting for these are set to 'Minimal' flick all the sound setting up to maximum, and you'll be alright. The volume i did notice is a little quieter than most of the walkmans i have had........but to be fair........thats probably good for my hearing in the long run.......
The Controls are simple, 9 Buttons arranged on the front of the system, 10 minutes after buying this machine, you can safely put it in your pocket, and navigate by touch.......simple.
The battery is HUGE. I listen to my MP3 Alot.......if i am outside my house, its playing..........and playing. With a full charge, i can get more than a weeks worth of music out of it. in the last two days, i have used it for about 4 hours, on my way to and from work, and the battery monitor hassnt budged. The monitor is also clever.......unlike a lot of battery warnings, this machine WILL tell you how much battery you have left, rather than telling you it has full battery for 90% of the time, then running out about 30mins after the first bar goes.
I have been sitting here for an hour now........looking at it and listening to it..........i have found 1 flaw...........the plastic shield that covers the charger port and usb jack, is held on with two tiny thin pieces of plastic.........one of the is broken. Thats it...................
I cant finnish this review without a comparison to the ipod......i held the NW-HD5 upto my old ipod......and i could actually hear the ipod sobbing.
In 5 years time........If MP3's are stll the format of choise, their design and functionallity will be measured against Sonys Network Walkman NW-HD5 MP3.
