Let's not beat around the bush; cables are not exciting. No matter how brilliant the Playstation 3 is, no matter how much fun you have with it, the cables are going to be the dullest, most boring bit. So when you buy them, you want them to last, if only so you never have to experience the tedium that is shopping for wires ever again. I'm pleased to report that Sony's official HDMI cable is as good as I've seen so far.

Performance is going to be the main factor in choosing your cable, and while I have little to compare it to, Sony's HDMI cable is the Ferrari in performance terms. A beautifully crisp, clear picture, with no fuzziness, no messy little patches on screen - the visual quality is outstanding. The picture never suffers from slow down, or any issues whatsoever as far as I can see, and the audio is similarly excellent. You will need a decent sound system to fully appreciate it, but the difference is definitely there, and HDMI audio is fantastic. No buzzing, no crackling, nothing - just crystal clear sound to match the beautiful picture. Performance wise, Sony's HDMI cable is godly.

The only other main area of the cable is it's reliability. Well, I've had mine six months, and I'm still waiting for even a hint of a problem. So far, I'm happy to say it hasn't missed a beat. The build quality is of Sony's usual high standards, and my HDMI cable is certainly issue free. I've never heard of a problem with anyone else's either, which is a good sign.

Perhaps the only drawback is that you do wonder why you are having to pay for the cable. It should really come with the console, out of the box, and having to pay extra to get your hands on it reeks of a rip-off. However, with such a long lifetime, hopefully it should prove value for money.

All in all then, Sony's official HDMI cable is excellent. You can really see the difference in both picture and, provided you have some decent speakers, audio when using it. It seems to be flawless with regards to reliability too, and isn't too overpriced. It's just a pity that Sony make you pay for it in the first place.
