At present this is the standard controller for the PS3. It follows the sucessful layout of the Dual shock two controller that was used on the PS2. The controller uses the same traditional dual analogue stick, direction buttions and four action buttons (triangle, square, circle and cross) which are all pressure sensative as well as the 4 shoulder buttons (L1 L2 R1 R2) and when depressed the analogue stick also act a buttons.
Main Differences
The first thing you will notice is the lack of a cable. The controller is wireless using bluetooth technology. In my experience it has worked perfectly, never loosing signal and never having a problem with the PS3 finding the controller. A USB cable is supplied which is used to charge the in-built batteries. I have found that each charge lasts about 15 hours of playing time.
There is no rumble effects on this controller. Sony initally said it would intefer with the movement sensative nature of the pad, however the new Dual Shock 3 conroller will have the rumble feature.
This controller is much lighter than the previous PS2 controller, great as far as i'm concerned.
The L2 and R2 buttons have been slightly modified to make them easier to use.
Motion sensative. This is not in the same league as the Wii, however it is very effictive in games like tony Hawk's Project 8 for use when balancing, and the sensativity can be altered.
The Center button allows you to control the PS3. You can turn it on and off, quit a game and see the charge of the controller, all very useful
Overall
The basic design is great, it fits into your hands perfectly, all the button are easy to reach and after hours of playing i have had no hint of any type of strain or ache. It is well built and durable (thrown it at the wall several times when i havent been winning playing Call of Duty 4)
It has great functionality with the DVD, DIVX and Bluray player build into the PS3, as its wirless its a true remote control. when you are using several controllers together they all seem to sort themselvs out.
