The SIXAXIS is a wireless, lightweight controller for the PS3. However, it crucially lacks the rumble facility that has since been included in the newly released DUALSHOCK 3 controller.
For me, the SIXAXIS appears to have been a temporary controller bundled in with the initial batches of PS3s and available only until the technology was perfected to install rumble into the controller. Now that this has been done, the DUALSHOCK 3 is the way forward. It is exactly the same as the SIXAXIS, but feels slightly heavier (in a good way) and has rumble. The SIXAXIS has been discontinued from production, and the DUALSHOCK 3 is undoubtedly its superior.
However, if you can snap one of these up for £15 or so, and dont care too much about the lack of rumble, then definitely go for it. They are reliable controllers based on the typical Sony design, and with the use of the PS button in the centre can even wireless turn on and off the PS3. However, the L2 and R2 buttons are shaped such that your fingers do not fully sit on them as triggers - I recommend buying a clip on enhancement for a few pounds such as 'Gioteck Real Triggers' if you want to enhance your experience with this SIXAXIS.
These controllers are different to the old PS2 controllers in the sense that they are wireless and have motion sensing capabilities. In certain games, you will need to shake the SIXAXIS controller to activiate certain functions, which is a nice touch, but has so far been definitely underused in games.
The fact that these are chargeable via a USB cable and do no need batteries is also an excellent plus - so if you can can these on the cheap and just need some extra controllers, definitely go for them. Otherwise, I would recommend you go for the superior DUALSHOCK 3 model.
