I joined the console world recently having been a die-hard fps player for years and was very pleasantly surprised with my new PS3. The toss up was between a Wii, the Xbox and the PS3 and I went for the PS3 basically because of the blu-ray player. Also, Microsoft won't want to turn the Xbox into too much of a media centre so as not to dent the 'Windows media centre' sales, and the Wii whilst fun is old tech.
When it arrived I discovered more reasons apart from gaming that the PS3 is great and here they are:
1) It's a media center, e.g. plug in a normal USB hard drive and play music files, play video files view pics. Sweet.
2) You can get a relatively cheap remote control and your PS3 instantly replaces your DVD player and is a nice Blu-Ray player too.
3) This slim PS3 is really quiet and consumes less power.
4) The interface is very nice to use with excellent integration into the online shop and lets you meet your friends online easily.
5) The online store has loads of cheap great games e.g. Wipeout HD, Worms plus a huge bunch of PS 1 games. Don't be put off by the prices in the shops, you can pick up some great fun games for you and the kids for as little as fiver.
6) Game quality is very good. I have a high end PC to compare and am satisfied with the quality.
7) Wireless controller, it's lighter than the old ones and works a treat.
8) You can attach a keyboard and mouse, even a printer.
9) Did I mention Wipeout HD? And it's cheap.
10) Lots of demos to download and try out from the online store.
11) 120 gig hard drive.
On the negative side I would say that controllers aren't cheap, and you can't play PS2 games on it. But you can't begrudge Sony that, the PS2 is still an active system and they won't dent its sales.
If you buy one, factor in the cost of an extra controller and a remote control. I recommend it unreservedly and with the Blu-Ray player it's practically a no-brainer, have fun.

Sorry this tells me about what it is actually like to use the console more like a list of specs NH
Advantages: Blu-ray, free online, nice extras like vidzone & iplayer. Almost silent operation Disadvantages: Rubbish controller, still expensive, online nowhere near as good as xbox live
Advantages: i don't think their is one unless you wanna save on the electricity bill a tiny percentage. Disadvantages: There's really not much point to it. but i still love playstation!
