After all this delay and waiting is the PS2 worth £300 and all the haggle to pre-order one. At this moment in time no. The graphics and speed capabilities of the PS2 are fantastic but there has been many hardware problems. The disc drive getting jammed and the DVD player not working properly at the most common problems and these PS2's can't be replaced until the next shipment in march arrives and even then its not guarenteed.
There has been no problems with software except the lack of good titles. Timesplitters and Tekken tag are the best 2 but both are not top notch. Timesplitters is weird and somwhat uninteresting to play and Tekken Tag is really Tekken 3 with a bit better graphics and a tag mode. So far the PS2 looks like a machine for sequels like tomb raider 5 or 6 or whatever, Metal Gear 2(good game though, unoriginal name), Ridge Racer 5, Iss, Fifa 2001 etc. Original and new titles sell a console well, so far no original games are available except the slightly original timesplitters.
The price is a hefty fee for a home console, yes it does come with a DVD player but I would rather have no DVD player and have the console £150 cheaper. If Sony did this, have the option of paying £300 for a DVD player built in or paying around £150 for just the PS2 I would be much more tempted.
I was also dissappointed when I found out that there would still be only 2 controller ports instead of the much more useful 4. This means shelling out £20-£30 on a multi-tap for multiplayer gaming.
Internet play will be available only when Broadband technology is available, in the USA it already is, but as usual over here we have to wait longer AGAIN.
Overall the PS2 has massive potential but so far has shown a poor example of its possible greatness. I reccommend waiting to see what happens when the Nintendo Gamecube and Microsoft X-Box arrive and whether the Dreamcast becomes successful.

(+) Plenty of storage space, for media. Good Games, Great for partys, with singstar. Very Reliable. (-) Sometimes the optical drive, breaks; but not very likely, my 60gb still working after 2 1/2 years.
I doubt you can say there is 'a lack of good games' since its unlikely you have played every single game in the ps1 back catalogue.

it has been a total mass marketing hype..when there is a serious shortage of chips - true, would be better/cheaper without the DVD, Good opinion, cheers, CH
Advantages: Its huge amount of games past, present and future. DVD Disadvantages: Too many games means a possible lack of quality titles and reduced revenues for developers
Advantages: It's Sony! It's got the most software developer support! Final Fantasy continues! Disadvantages: It's quite ugly, graphics are jagged in places

Review of Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2)
Advantages: Loads of games, doubles up as a DvD player, plays PS1 games. Disadvantages: Needs a mulitap for 3 players or more, Games should be cheaper.
