I quite recently got a Playstation 2 console, with two games and a dual shock controller which cost me about £350. This sounds like a large chunk of money, but when you break it down into what you get, it's not. Firstly, let's take the price of the two games off. Say £35-40 per game, that's at least £70 to come off. Then you've got the fact that it has a built in DVD player as well as a built in CD player. The cheapest DVD player out is about £100, and the one in the playstation 2 is a good quality player (made by Sony, need I say more?) so that's about £150 for the CD/DVD player. So in effect, I have actually only paid £130 for my brand new, top of the range console - and when you consider the original price of the Playstation, that was £300, but with the 2 you really get your money's worth. It can be placed flat or vertical. It's a rather enchanting black with luminous blue letters proclaiming PS2 on the front. It's draw loading, so all your dust doesn't fall in the top, and they are more reliable than a top loading. It's got a fan, which is quite noisy if you're listening for it, but once you get into a game, then it isn't noticeable. The graphics are incredibly lifelike on it. They are very smooth, and you don't get any pop-up at all. Games are at least twice the size that they were on the Playstation, and they're non-linear too. DVD's play incredibly smoothly on this, something that we were worried about as we got a lot of "juddering" on our PC with a graphics card - but no need to worry, as it's faultless. I've played everything from cartoons to action, and not one thing has caused a problem. You can buy loads of accessories, including a remote control for use with the DVD player, a "Freeplay" which allows wireless use of the joypads via infra-red, skateboards, steering package and gun. There's plenty more, but too much to list. The PS2 is also going to be internet ready within the next few months, so you can play online games such as Unreal Tournament, or email or generally surf. They'll also be bringing out a printer and a scanner for definite within the next few months as well, so it'll be a PS2/PC! Anyone think it's not worth the £300?

(+) Plenty of storage space, for media. Good Games, Great for partys, with singstar. Very Reliable. (-) Sometimes the optical drive, breaks; but not very likely, my 60gb still working after 2 1/2 years.
Advantages: It's Sony! It's got the most software developer support! Final Fantasy continues! Disadvantages: It's quite ugly, graphics are jagged in places
