Im not going to bore you with about a page of tech specs that i dont understand and others arnt likely to either, but if you are interested then the official Sony PS2 site is below.
The Playstation 2 my friends is not only a games console, it is a fine quality DVD Player and Audio CD Player. A brilliant future investment, well until the next Playstation comes out anyway. It is already beating Microsoft's X-BOX by far as well as the Nintendo GameCube to a lesser extent in the console wars. The information about the DVD player and the games etc are below under their headings.
*DVD PLAYER*
I have found no major difference between the PS2 and a £200 DVD Player, O.K. the PS2 doesnt come with a remote but you can get one for around £10-£20, not the biggest amount of cash and its worth it because the joy pad is hard to get use to for using it with the DVD. The quality is great, somewhat better than what i initially thoight it would be, the PS2 is cabale of playing dual layer 9GB DVD's, the normal size for most DVD's is 4.7GB so you'll
be quite safe for future tech advances. The DVD player cannot play all regions, be warned but you can buy some add-ons like Region-X available at Amazon.co.uk for £9.99 and an additional memory is required but not included in the deal,
The graphics are stunning, they are remarkeably similar to most modern PC graphics that you see when playing on the newer more technically demanding PC games, it is amazing.
*THE GAMES*
I have played on 'CONFLICT:DESERT STORM' and 'FINAL FANTASY X', both are stunning games. The FMV sequences and the playing graphics on 'Final Fantasy X' just blow you away, the realism if you have seen the movie, 'Final Fantasy:The Spirits Within' then you will have an idea of the quality of the amazing graphics, it almost looks human in some seens. I personally am addicted to Role Player Games like Final Fantasy and think they are so addictive and involve the player more so than any other game. 'CONFLICT:DESERT STORM' is a highly realistic game that is based on the actual Gulf War and as you complete a mission you are awarded medals and skill points for each character depending on their effectiveness throughout the level. At the start of each level you see a small generalised caption about the stage in the war then an FMV sequence which is then followed by a map.
I have seen many other games being played like Metal Gear Solid 2 of the Adventure Genre and Gran Turismo 3 of the Racing genre and i can tell you they are very addictive and very stunning in graphics and sound, if you have ever played either game on the PS1 then you will know how good they were then.
Their is a wide range of games already out and some that are not availiable on other platforms such as the X-BOX or the GAMECUBE. The PS2 is capable of playing the PSONE games so you dont have to keep changing the wires at the back of your T.V. just because you want to play your older games.
*THE HARDWARE*
The PS2's hardware is basically the same as the PS1's, it has the joypad, the steering wheel, the G-CON light gun and the dance mat along with some new ones like the DVD remote and the vertical stand.
*INTERNET COMPATIBILTY AND E-MAIL*
Well i must admit that at the moment the choice of internet add-on's are very limited unless you live in Japan but it is very likely that in the not too distant future that new internet compatibilty options will become available, computer sockets are already built in to the console such as a Firewire Socket and USB ports for use with future periphirals.
*THE BIG ONE. THE FUTURE*
In my opinion the PS2 will beat its main competitors because of the wide range of games availiable from the PS1 and the new PS2 games that that are popular such as the Final Fantasy Series or the Metal Gear Solid Series, the games have a wider fanbase as does the console to its competitors. Sony have proved perviously with the PS1 that they can produce a console that can beat competiton, it was more succesful than the technologically advanced SEGA Dreamcast. Microsoft have proved themselves in the PC industry but does their X-BOX look more like an 80's video player than a console, should Microsoft stick to what their good at. Certain popular games on the PS2 are not availiable on the X-BOX or the GAMECUBE which could entice many of the PS1 owners to get the PS2 rather than the latter.
The PS2 may not be as technologically advanced as its competitors but it is more popular, Which is what we have seen when Sega introduced the technologically superior Dreamcast on to the Market to compete with the Sony Playstation, Who Won, The PS1. Why? Because it had already established a fan base and had a larger range of games, exactly what is happening now with the X-BOX and the PS2.
(+) Plenty of storage space, for media. Good Games, Great for partys, with singstar. Very Reliable. (-) Sometimes the optical drive, breaks; but not very likely, my 60gb still working after 2 1/2 years.
Advantages: It's Sony! It's got the most software developer support! Final Fantasy continues! Disadvantages: It's quite ugly, graphics are jagged in places

Advantages: Loads of games, doubles up as a DvD player, plays PS1 games. Disadvantages: Needs a mulitap for 3 players or more, Games should be cheaper.
