Dear reader let me regale you with a tale of woe and then salvation.
Picture the scene: November 13th 2003, Argos store in Dundee's newest and busiest shopping centre, Queues out the door, children screaming, parents rending their clothes in frustration, much weeping and wailng all round. I emerge triumphant clutching in my sweaty mitts a brand spanking new Playstation2 in full silver livery which at that time was rarer than rocking horse droppings, My 12 year old sons Xmas present, Oh boy this was going to win me parent of the year. Xmas Day arrives, you know the scenario, gentle snow falling, a goose slowly turning on the spit over a roaring fire, bemittened orphans singing carols out side the windows, living room like a battlefield, son hunched over desk in darkened bedroom door firmly closed. For all we knew he could have been abducted by Aliens for all we saw him from then on in. Bless you Sony for the worlds first electronic babysitter and teenage silencer.
Ok buckle up::: Time Shift in progress>>>>>>>
Tuesday 26th October 2004: Sound of much weeping and wailing from son's bedroom, cries of "Oh No it cant be true" and "
I dont belive that this is happening", so think I it's one of two things, either he has discovered that another species exists ie.. females ( I recoiled in horror at the thought of the little talk that I would have to have with him) or his toy was bust. With a tear in his eye and a quiver on his lips he informed me that the love of his live had just died on him and horror of horror right in the middle of the 2nd half of Dundee United v Dundee (United winning 12-0 ) Would FIFA 2005 ever be the same he cried. A pat on the back and a Pot Noodle went some way to compensate but assurances from me that I would get right on the case in the morning sent him of to bed molified somewhat.
Wednesday 27th October 2004: Phoned Argos for advice, 1st question when was it purchased and did we have the receipt, answer, 11 months ago and yes, just bring it in to the shop and we will either exchange it or send it back for repair, okay dokay nothing simpler, down to Argos I go, see pleasant young man who seems to know his way about the whole business, swap PS2 for a nice repair receipt and with the phrase "ready in 14 to 28 days" ringing in my ears head off home to advise son. By the time I have driven home the Argos store has been in touch and informed me that because of the DATA PROTECTION ACT, Sony wont deal with Argos and we must contact them direct ( Go Figure). Sons grief at this stage is reaching carpet munching proportions with questions like is that 14 to 28 working days or are weekends included and why is god so cruel to little boys ( He's 5' 11' and 135lbs) little boy, Yeah right and I can dance like the King of Siam.
Thursday 28th October 2004: So quick trip to Argos, collect unrepaired PS2 and contact number of Sony Careline, head back to the ranch prepared to do battle with the might of a multi-national corporations call centre, particularlly one which uses the Data Protection Act to turn down a repair request . 12:20pm call Sony ( 08705 998877) spend just over 4mins on hold listening to the usual cr*p music and naff announcements before call is answered by "Wayne", this guy must be the jewel in Sony's crown he is polite, pleasant, well informed & efficient. His manner and style of questioning is such that I actually believed that he was interested in dealing with my query.
After checking the serial number of the defective unit and their records to see if we had registered with Sony when we purchased the unit ( we had) he immediately offered a re-manufactured unit delivered to our door within 24hrs. This is a formerly owned unit which has been returned to Sony, given a complete overhaul including renewal of all the major parts and a brand new case, it also comes with the option of replacing the power lead, AV lead, Scart block and one of the two controllers, the choice of exchanging is up to you, the courier will swap any or all of the bits at your door. After explaining in fine detail the exchange procedure to be adopted Wayne again expressed his regrets that we had had to contact them and hoped we would continue to enjoy the product.
Friday 29th October 2004: 13:35, Doorbell rings Parcelline courier has the goods, securely sealed in a plastic transit box, the exchange is carried out in less than 2mins and he is on his way. Son duly arrives home from school , Oh his little face was a picture, and after grunting his thanks ( I think ) he promptly retreated to his lair to commence battle with GTA San Andreas, bought by his doting mother just this very afternoon.
In summary I have dealt with many call centres in both my personal live and my working life and I can truly say that the Sony Careline is simply the most efficient, caring and adept call centre I have ever called, Wayne is a real gem and the logistical support that goes into shipping and handling the run out of a replacement door to door in 24 hours is to be praised no end.
As for my son? well who knows I havn't seen him for 6 hours now but horror of horror I've just read that GTA SA has sex for sale on it ( hence 18cert) I can feel that talk coming on
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
(+) Plenty of storage space, for media. Good Games, Great for partys, with singstar. Very Reliable. (-) Sometimes the optical drive, breaks; but not very likely, my 60gb still working after 2 1/2 years.
Advantages: Its huge amount of games past, present and future. DVD Disadvantages: Too many games means a possible lack of quality titles and reduced revenues for developers
Advantages: It's Sony! It's got the most software developer support! Final Fantasy continues! Disadvantages: It's quite ugly, graphics are jagged in places

Review of Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2)
Advantages: Loads of games, doubles up as a DvD player, plays PS1 games. Disadvantages: Needs a mulitap for 3 players or more, Games should be cheaper.
