"With the news of the Sony PS2 launch in October, some magazines and newspapers are talking of the end of standalone DVD players. After all, if you can have a top games console with DVD capabilities for £300, why spend £200-£500 on a box that just plays DVD's? However, this type of thinking is totally stupid. Sure, the DVD option on the PS2 is very useful, and will be used by many buyers, but the quality of the sound and images is nothing like even the cheapest DVD players. The original Playstation played CD's, but people didn't throw away their CD players for the simple reason that the Playstation playback was pretty poor. Yes, people will play DVD's on their PS2's, but standalone DVD players will continue to sell well." - So what a lot of PS2 users wont have DVD players and you cant deny it - The PS2 DVD quailty can be beaten by £500 models but not by £300 ones. And even if it could it is better than VHS so most PS2 users will love it!

Not bad but very little detail about the machine and its dvd options.

Useful to know that the PS2 is perhaps not a catch all substitute for a dedicated DVD player.

Excellent opinion, I am glad to know that the playback quality is not that good as I was wondering why anyone would want a DVD only player when they could get a games machine for the same price. I will bear the quality factor in mind if ever deciding to get one later on.
Advantages: DVD........ oooh Disadvantages: £400 price tage if you find one, poor launch games, competition very tough... wave bye bye to that nice Mr Sony now won't you children!
Advantages: It's Sony! It's got the most software developer support! Final Fantasy continues! Disadvantages: It's quite ugly, graphics are jagged in places

Review of Sony PlayStation 2 (PS2)
Advantages: Loads of games, doubles up as a DvD player, plays PS1 games. Disadvantages: Needs a mulitap for 3 players or more, Games should be cheaper.
