When I went to buy my PS3 at the end of 2008, I was torn between buying the PS3 and the Xbox 360. I must admit one of the biggest factors between the 2 was the price, the Xbox's price tag was a lot lower, but I wanted online play and online cost a LOT in the long run with the Xbox. However the PS3 was a lot more expensive initially, the online was free, but that wasn't the only reason I chose the PS3...
The Graphics on the PS3 are truly amazing, and I tried it without HD initially, but after hooking it up to my HDTV, I was blown away. One of the first games I played was Fifa 09, and I was quite honestly convinced that the start up picture of Ronaldinho, was actually a picture and refused to believe that it was actually computer generated after one of my friends told me! Another game I got for Christmas of that year was Need for Speed: Undercover, and the graphics are so real, upon first glance, anyone would think that it was real Video Camera footage. However to fully enjoy the graphics, I do believe that you have to purchase a HD cable for a HDTV.
The next outstanding feature about the PS3 was the sound quality. During Fifa 09, the commentary and the crowd sounded so realistic and created such an atmosphere that you felt like you were acutally inside a realy football stadium! And during Need for Speed and other games like Grand Theft Auto IV, the car sounds were so realistic, as if someone was driving a sports car right inside the very same room, and if you get surround sound speakers, it makes it so much more enjoyable.
The online play was a big forte for me. When I was deciding before, between the PS3 and Xbox 360, as said before, online play was a HUGE factor for me. And although every raves about how good the online play was for the Xbox, I couldn't get over the fact that the PS3's was free, and after comparing the PS3's online capabilities to the Xbox, I am happy I went for the PS3, because although the Xbox 360's online does have some features that the PS3 lacks, it was not a huge enough difference to make me regret buying the PS3.
One final big feature that I believe tipped me over the edge to the PS3, was the wireless controller (which the Xbox does support) and Sixaxis. Sixaxis is the use of an accelerometer in the PS3 controllers. For example, on Grand Theft Auto IV, when you go over a jump, you can apply after touch, and if you tilt the controller to the right, the car will actually lean over to the right, this is also true on Grand Theft Auto for: Riding Bikes, flying Helicopters, Riding boats, Reloading weapons, playing in game Darts and Bowling, and Auto Pitch Callibration. Also the wireless function means that you don't have to plug them into slots on the console, which means in some games (e.g. Fifa 09) you can have up to 7 people playing at once!
One final little feature which I will talk about briefly is the Playstation Eye, this is the PS3's version of the PS2's eyetoy, although I am yet to get one, it can be used in a fair few games already and many more in the future, and at only £25, its an oppurtunity you shouldn't pass by.
The only little features I have to nag about on the PS3 is: The Size, it is very bulky, and although it does have a large hard drive, it is still a bit on the bulky side; the lack of backtrack to PS2 games, luckily I never fell deeply in love with any PS2 so it isn't a big deal for me, but it would be nice to have the option; and finally the price, it is generally in the range of £300, but this is literally just one payment of £300, yeah you can buy accessories, like for any console, but the online is free FOREVER, so once you've saved up your pennies, you can buy and enjoy your PS3 to its full potential.
So would I recommend this, yes, especially if your looking for online play, and even if your not, its wide vairety of features and games, is something that anyone can enjoy!
