Sony's Playstation 3 is thier third go around in the Video Game business. My console reviews usually consist of reviews in the following categories Controller, Graphics, Multiplayer/Online, and Game Library. Much like the Xbox 360, i'll also be reviewing the Design of the PS3.
The design of the PS3 is the more classy of the three new consoles. The PS3 is a black square system with a curved top. While the design is beautiful, this system is very big, matching the 360 in terms of size. The system also offers Blu-ray but, in my opinion, that should not be the only reason you should be spending $400-500 on this system.
The PS3's controller is the classic Playstation controller once again and that shouldn't be a problem for any gamer. The original PS3 controller was the Sixaxis but is now Dualshock 3. For a company that created the original Dualshock Controller, taking over a year to put it on the PS3 is really strange. Like the Wii, the PS3's controller is motion-sensing, which is a really up and down situation. It works for some games but is annoying on others.
Graphically, the system is wonderful. The graphics are all very realistic. The graphics are a little better then the 360 but not in the areas that you would expect. The character models on most of the PS3 games are a little better and shadows and reflections are slighty more noticeable but that's really about it. However, the PS3's lighting and colors aren't as good and a there are a good number of games that suffer from framerate issues and graphical pop-ups.
The Online for the PS3 is pretty good. The PS3's Playstation Network has a great big online with a variety of things to do and download. One of the greatest features i like is being able to access the regular internet. Sony just recently came out with Home, which is pretty much their family friendly version of the program Second Life. The only real problems i've experienced with this online is that it isn't as fast as Xbox Live and is also slow on downloads. The Playstation Network does suffer from a great deal of slowdown moments at times and you'll find that you're connection will jump up and down on some occasions but that's really about it. Downloading games or add-ons to your games is much slower then Xbox Live, which is a real pain when the files are extremely large.
One of the biggest disadvantages that the PS3 has when compared to the 360 and Wii is the size of its game library. The PS3 thus far has the smallest gamelist out of all three systems but that isn't saying that the PS3's games aren't great. The PS3 has a good number of exclusives including Killzone 2, Resistance, Metal Gear Solid 4 and their new exclusive Infamous.
So, how does the PS3 stand in the console generation? It stands pretty good on its own but if you already own a 360, i don't recommend this game system because there isn't much difference between the two but if you haven't upgraded to this generation of consoles then by all means check it out.
(+) i don't think their is one unless you wanna save on the electricity bill a tiny percentage. (-) There's really not much point to it. but i still love playstation!
