Advantages Great Game Library, Great Graphics Overall, and Good Multiplayer.

Disadvantages Tricky Controls

This marked Sony's debut in the world of Video Games and what a great debut it was with the Playstation. I review in five different categories, Design, Controller, Graphics, Multiplayer, and Game Library.

The design of the first version of the Sony Playstation wasn't necessarily pretty. This system was pretty much a gray box with two control slots and two memory card slots. There was later a new slimmer design that released right after the debut of the Playstation 2 and it was a much nicer and more compact design. The smaller design had a few features added to it, the most noticeable was a small LCD screen that could be connected to it, which was great because you could play it while traveling.

The Playstation's controller also went through some change but it happened very early on. The original Playstation controller was a controller with no analog sticks whatsoever. The controller would then add on two analog sticks and that would be the design that Sony would stick with for all their systems. The Dualshock controller was rather tougher to get use to mainly because the analog sticks were in the center of the controller and if you had a game that required both sticks and the regular buttons, it would get rather problematic. This little problem unfortunately still exist for some games on both the PS2 and PS3.

Graphical quality was very well done by Sony. Graphics were a little better then the Saturn but considering the fact that this was Sony's first outing next to the veteran Sega, that was quite an accomplishment. Graphics were better then the N64 mainly because everything had realistic shapes and character models were better while the N64 had a lot of polygon issues. The only disadvantage that Sony had next to the Saturn and N64 is a great deal of graphical pops, objects and body parts cutting out on almost all of its games. This has been a problem that has plagued the PS2 and some of the PS3 games as well and while not a huge problem, it seems a little odd that Sony's systems still suffer from it.

This generation still ran off of regular multiplayer and much like the Saturn, Sony's system only had two controller slots but most of Sony's games had great multiplayer. The only real issue that Sony had with multiplayer and this was usually the story for the systems of that generation and that was the framerate issue, the game would usually run much slower then when single player.

The Playstation's game library is one of the best game library's in history. The Playstation has games in every single genre that you can imagine and that is really its strongest appeal. The Playstation didn't really have a good number of exclusives and didn't have a mascot like Mario or Sonic but for some reason that didn't matter with the Playstation, we loved it regardless.

Overall, there are always those game systems that live on forever and the original Playstation is one of those systems.

Surprised you can say the PlayStation didn't really have a good number of exclusives - it had more than plenty! And some might have saw Crash Bandicoot as a mascot for the PlayStation...
