Picture quality is very good and I have the sound output through the digital connection to my Yamaha Dolby Digital amplifier which makes a very nice sound, even with those MP3 tracks. I would always recommend using a good amp and speakers though as this will have a ... ...actually an LG product with Sony branding. This is not really a bad thing, my original DVD player was LG and is still going strong, but it does explain why a Sony product is cheaper than their normal premium branded items.
There was an issue with the rear scart connections in that if you had it wired a certain way then the record quality would have a funny sheen to it. But if its there then I haven't seen it, just to let you folks know. more
My good lady brought this home a couple of months ago to replace our aging VCR and DVD player and I was sceptical to say the least.
The cost at retail varies between £140 and £180 so shop around. We got it cheaper because of where the other half works, but even at full price it still represents good value for money.
The pro's of this unit are obvious. It will accept all DVD formats in both + and -, reading and writing to both with no apparent difference, and with the benefit of Videoplus recording is a doddle although it can be manually programmed just as easily. It will also play CD's and MP3's but a massive plus to me was when I discovered that you could record your MP3 to a DVD disc instead and it will also play that too. Fifty albums or so on one disc is nearly my entire music collection! Other pro's are the great range of connections including RGB Scart, digital sound output, progressive scan, firewire for the camcorder and analogue front connections too and finally component output as well. If that lot doesn't satisfy then you must want to spend lots more money. The Firewire connection is extremely useful with my Sony camcorder. Now the con's. There are some, but not many, the main gripe being the start-up time. It can take up to thirty seconds at least to start and then you need to insert a disc and initialize it to get into a position to record. Not very handy for spur of the moment needs. Also the record quality for these machines and every other manufacturers machines is done in strange catergories of High Quality 1-Hour, Standard Play 2-Hour and then Extended Play 4-Hour and Super Long Play. Sounds alright until you try to record a film over two hours long and are forced to use Extended Play, which is OK but not for prolonged watching as there is a lot of fuzzing to the image. Keep to the top two modes if at all possible for best quality. The other oddity, which I only discovered when I changed the machine to multi-region, is that this machine is actually an LG product with Sony branding. This is not really a bad thing, my original DVD player was LG and is still going strong, but it does explain why a Sony product is cheaper than their normal premium branded items. Overall, I'm converted from the VHS cassette any day of the week. The ease of use from set-up through to timer recording makes it a thoroughly enjoyable product to use and there have been no issues in the reliability stakes whatsoever.
A good looking and reasonably small model which suited our needs perfectly. The recorder is easy to set up and connect with an easy to follow manual and auto set up features. The ability to record in dual format is very handy as i never buy the same discs each time and just get what is cheapest in front of me. This model also offers a wide range of compatible playback options including our 8cm dvds from our camcorder. The remote control is a bit ... ...prefer to just point and play/record. I also make errors on my timer set ups because no matter how amny times I set it I press the 'enter' button which seems logical but in fact wipes your entry! A design fault or my fault? You decide. It has served us well for 18 months but internet research reveals common faults with these machines after about 2 years. I'm waiting for ours to pack in but still going at the moment. ...

Advantages: None that I can see, other than it is no longer made Disadvantages: waste of resources and money.
...I pay the premium for Sony if I wanted an LG??? Frankly this would not matter if it actually worked. First failed after 1 month, second after 18 months. Just bought a Panasonic DMREZ27 which cost less (with 5 year warranty), works better and appears to be made by Panasonic. Absolutely gutted that Sony would do this, gone from lifelong Sony fan to never again.
Check internet to confirm these failures, all laser heads. Cost > 100 to repair, so not ...

Advantages: easy to use, OK features Disadvantages: minor problem occur
Good points: the Sony RDR-GX 210 S is easy to use very basic, and all the controls are normal, it has good sound quality and image quality.
Bad points: makes a lot of noise when loading a DVD (sounds like a fighter jet setting off), I have been having difficulties with the open and close slot it has a mind of its own : ), the Sony RDR-GX 210 S worked well for the first few days then I started noticing faults with the LCD display. price:I bought ... ...the price range for the Sony RDR-GX 210 S is between ₤135 - ₤200+, you have to keep your eyes pealed and you should search the internet for the cheapest prices, never pay more than ₤140!

Advantages: Records in multi formats, high quality, low price Disadvantages: Takes a few seconds before it is ready to record, otheriwse its great
This DVD recorder is excellent value for money, especially considering the huge range of features included. You will be hard pushed to find one with as many features at such a low price.

...The staff at the local Sony Centre were disinterested and unhelpful (Brighton Western Rd). Up to this point our household had been brand loyal to Sony for 26 years but now our confidence is badly shaken.
Since then, the repaired DVD records successfully most of the time, but fails enough times to be annoying and disappointing when a favourite episode is not recorded. There seems to be no detectable reason why it does this, despite investigation.
... ...programmes onto DVD, much better than VHS, chapter controls etc make life much easier. It's a shame that the maximum length of time for one disc is four hours - (you can get a longer extended play format but the sound and picture quality is very poor). This makes recording when going away on holiday unsatisfactory.
Whether all recordable DVD players are this unsatisfactory I don't know - I hope not. ...
