Manufacturer's product description
With storage requirements growing at upwards of 87% annually, organizations today are recognizing that the need to cope with storing, managing and protecting vital data is a deciding factor to achieve operational efficiency and remain competitive. Alongside increased capacities, businesses need faster access and faster transfer speeds, higher reliability and simpler integration into existing IT infrastructures, with a smaller hardware footprint. Coupled with this, is the demand for a significantly reduced cost of ownership. Sony recognized these demands and with its continuous research and development engineered the ultimate in high capacity tape storage - S-AIT. Developed specifically to address the high speed, high volume requirements of backup systems for business critical data applications, the S-AIT drive delivers an incredible 500 GB capacity and is the first tape drive to break through the 1TB barrier (1.3TB compressed). What's more, the S-AIT drive can store, access and manage data faster than ever before. With an impressive transfer rate of up to 78MB/s (30MB/s uncompressed), valuable time saved can be used to concentrate on other, more important tasks at hand. Sleek Sony technology, as standard, delivers superior performance for your business. The package includes: S-AIT Desktop Drive; Power cable (EU+UK); Spare air filter; Quick Start Guide; Device driver and operating instructions (on CD-ROM); Warranty Pack (3 Year, Rapid Replacement Service Program); Dantz Retrospect for Windows Full OEM version (1 server & 2 client licenses).
Advantages: small, lots of storage and really reliable Disadvantages: less portable than a small form hard disk drive, needs main to use
...This is my second hard drive. The first one I bought was a sony vaio that I bought off of ebay - a portable 120GB hard disk drive from the far east. It started giving me disk read and write errors about three to four months after I bought it. Moral of the story, buy from a reputable manufacturer and seller.
So I bought this from Amazon co uk, who are by far a superior online seller. Prices have come down and i managed to get this for £60 including free delivery. The drive is compact, not portable.
It needs to be plugged into mains as well as the computer which makes it less portable, but it is so quiet I can't even hear that is switched on even when it is writing or reading. I would highly recommend this product or even one of the bigger sized ones, though I couldn't afford the 1TB mybook.
Remember 500GB is marketing, actual...

Advantages: Simple Setup, great value for money Disadvantages: Win 2000/XP/Vista only - not for Win 98/ME
...I have previously purchased a Freecom 500GB external drive drive and have been very happy with it's performance and reliability. So when the drive started to become 80% full it was time to look for some additional storage. I saw the new Freecom 1TB drive on Amazon and given my previous good experiences purchased one straight away. It arrived this morning (Tuesday) having ordered in the previous Friday, and all of this post free.
For anyone that hasn't bought a Freecom external hard drive before, you get a very stylish drive unit, power adapter, leads and installation disk. Installing (in my case) took less than 5 minutes, most of the time was spent unpacking the pieces.
Simply attached the usb lead, power pack and switched on. Instantly recognised by the Windows XP operating system as the next drive letter.
The unit is virtually...

Advantages: Easy to use, easy to install, no complications, very very stable Disadvantages: None
...Existing as the cheapest external HDD in the market, WD has really sweeped the market.. A perferct combination of performance, quality and good price..
It comes in 250, 320, 500GB and just came out with 1TB...
The prices are incomparable.. This HDD is the most stable that I have ever used.. It has curbed the most irritating problems with HDD - that is stability issues.. No complications, just plug and play.. No installation of drivers, nothing at all.. It comes with built in Google software for photo management (Picasa).. The best thing is that it comes as FAT32 formatted, so it can be used in all (windows, mac and linux ubuntu)..
As far as speed of file transfer goes, its good as per to USB 2.0 speeds... For better speeds, go for the firewire versions.. WD has also come up with data backup versions of the same..
I havent had...

The interface transfer rate of this 3gigabit hard drive is phenomenal! Its literally blisteringly fast at almost 300 MBs per second. Now this is faster than most dual-core pcs can manage and its a shame this isn't a desktop processor instead! I usually... more
