The nikon 50mm 1.8 - a fantastic portrait lens

Advantages: great quality, low price, prime
Disadvantages: none

As anyone interested in photography will know - lenses don't come cheap, especially quality lens, except this one. The 50mm 1.8 has a reputation for quality at a reasonable price and it's a reputation well deserved. Yes the 50mm is a 'small' lens but it's a prime lens. Some may find that the need for them to move forwards or backwards to get the correct composition for a photograph is too irritating to make the purchase worthwhile over that of a zoom lens but the increase of quality combined with the price makes that an opinion that I beg to differ. If you shoot portraits, or are looking to start then the 50mm 1.8 will prove an invaluable piece of equipment, but it's uses are not limited to portraits only. At 1.8 the 50mm is a fast lens however it dies have a counterpart - the 50mm 1.4. The 1.4 is, by comparison, alot more expensive ...

Possibly the best lens I own for my DSLR - The Canon 50mm F/1.8

Advantages: Lightweight, cheap
Disadvantages: None

This is possibly the best lens I own for my Canon EOS 30D DSLR. (And for £65 what a bargain!) This is an incredibly light lens, and as I understand it, it is made entirely from plastic. It might feel a little too light, but believe me, it's a well constructed lens which yields fabulous results. It's also very cheap in comparison to other prime lenses, and I would consider it much better value for money than the 50mm f/1.4 As a prime lens, 50mm fixed, f/1.8 it can be used in relatively low light without a flash since it lets so much light through to the camera... Shorter exposure times means your subject has less time to move. It also has a pretty shallow depth of field, so a perfectly focussed subject can have a wonderfully blurred background. The tiny box this comes in contains the lens, front and rear caps, and a small leaflet ...

Review of Canon lens - 50 mm F/1.8

A Prime Example

Advantages: Low light performance, sharpness, colour saturation and contrast
Disadvantages: Plasticy construction and poor feel of manual focus ring

Overview ------------- The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 sits in between the cheap-o f/1.8 mkII version and the ridiculously expensive f/1.2 L-series version. There was a crazy f/1.0L lens at one time but this seems to have been discontinued (presumably as nobody could afford it). It is a "standard" prime lens but only for full frame DSLRs like the 5D. On a APS-C body it equates to 80mm. I bought it because I wanted a small and inconspicuous lens to use on my 5D and one that would plug a gap in my lens line-up that consists of f/4 L-Series zooms. Namely, a low light, shallow depth of field lens. Construction ------------------- The main things to note about the three variants is that the f/1.8 has a plastic mount and a micro-motor AF. The f/1.4 has a metal mount and a Micro-USM AF motor (quieter than the micro-motor but noisier ...
