There is little doubt in my mind that computers and the internet have revolutionised the way in which people listen to music. MP3 music files can be downloaded in just a few minutes with a broadband internet connection, computer games have replaced the few mandatory beeps and chirps of yesteryear with full bodied music and character voices, and there is now the option of listening to virtually any radio station in the world with just the click of a mouse button. Of course, the sound you hear when participating in any of those activities is only ever going to be as good as your computers speakers will allow, you may well have the fastest most powerful computer in your street with the latest sound card installed, but if your computers speakers are not up to the job you might as well have saved your money.

●Why I chose Sony SRS-Z510●

As I make computers for friends and family I am able to select the best components depending on what each user requires. But the one thing I always strongly advise is that a decent sound card and speaker set up is key. For those who are happy to go with my recommendation I install a Creative SoundBlaster 1024 sound card and Sony SRS-Z510 speakers. Many say that the £40 price tag seems a little steep for a set of speakers, but once I explain the strengths of them the potential recipient is usually convinced. Firstly, the speakers are powered, which means that damping is improved. Basically this means that the electric impulse which is converted into an acoustic impulse is not dampened at all by having the speakers emit an electric impulse back down the wire to the secondary power source. Powered speakers also eliminate the need for guessing how to pair the best amplifier to the speaker as they have the amplifier built in; this results in a far clearer and cleaner sound. Also, because the speakers are powered it means that the correct level of electricity is delivered without having to rely on an outside fuse that may well be the incorrect size. The best selling point in my mind though is that there are two analogue inputs, this means that you can have the speakers attached to a computer and also connect a secondary device such as a portable minidisk or MP3 player. This feature is invaluable to me as it cuts down the clutter that would accumulate if a separate speaker set up were needed for every music device I had, I am also safe in the knowledge that the music I am playing from either computer, minidisk or MP3 player is of a consistent and high standard.

●What you get for your money●

Well obviously you get the two speakers which are an attractive looking silver in common with most electrical equipment nowadays, the left speaker weighs 3oz more than the right one due to the power and volume controls and related internal workings. The AC adapter has a lead of around eight feet in length, and the cable linking the speakers to a computer is slightly less than seven feet long. The cable linking the two speakers is around six feet in length which is just about adequate in my experience. Finally, a small instruction leaflet that covers the basics of setup and how to obtain the best sound and a warranty card protecting the consumer for one year for parts and ninety days for labour is supplied.

Set up is simplicity itself, simply position the speakers so that they are going to deliver a well balanced sound and plug in the AC adapter to the back. Join your computer or portable music device to the speakers with the supplied wires, switch the power button and you are ready to bask in the speakers’ audible glory.

●Technical Information●

For those who wish to know exactly how much power or wattage the speakers are I have included this Technical paragraph. The speakers are 3 watts each and deliver a frequency range of 40 kHz, Built-in Mega Bass sound delivers satisfying low notes while high sensitivity achieves high acoustic output. The speakers have a combined weight of 1.1 kg and are 80mm wide by 145mm high by 135mm deep each. The AC adapter is 120 volts and the speaker grills are detachable. Finally, a headphone jack is positioned between the power and volume knobs for easy access.

●My Personal Opinion●

These speakers really are the bees’ knees, many times in the past I have bought the cheapest speakers I could find for my PC and regretted my choice with every crackle, whine and distortion. The Sony SRSZ510 are a good looking speaker setup that delivers sublime sound feedback, the bass is low and deep and without any booming or humming. Voices are crisp and clear and are delivered without crackle or interference. Turning the solid feeling volume knob up high while music is playing produces a clear, and very loud, result with no adverse effects to the sound, but sore ears on my part. The speakers are perhaps a little on the heavy side but as I do not move them from my desk this is not a problem. All in all a good, solid set of speakers, at a little under forty-two pounds from Amazon I do not consider them to be overly expensive, particularly when the sound they produce is more than a match for speaker systems that are two or three times more expensive. I can give nothing less than the full five stars.
