Sony SSMF515

They both sounded good, but the MF515's had much better highs, and much more bass. For close to 20 years, I owned a pair of Infinity RS-7 speakers, as they were my first investment in speakers. I listened to all the speakers in the store, and for all the ones in my price range that had the highs lows & mids I needed to have. However after 20 years, the foam around the cone began to deteriorate, and they began to distort. It was time to put them to rest, and I was not able to come up with much money. As I began my search, I started at all the popular Electronics Stores, and listened to so many speakers, it started to get confusing. All I wanted was something that would come close to my old Infinity’s.

I stumbled on to one more store, and they had several Sony speakers, small large, fat & tall. I narrowed my search to the SS-MF515, and the next speaker model lower. They both sounded good, but the MF515's had much better highs, and much more bass. As I stood there comparing the two, and listening to different types of music, I finally decided on the MF515's for sure.

They had the power rating I was looking for, I needed to pump about 120 watts into these, and they needed to take it. These are rated for 200 watts, so I figured that would give me a little cushion of power to play with as well. They stand tall, about 4 feet, they are narrow, which is good and bad. Good because they can slide into narrow spaces. Bad because they can be top heavy and can tip over fairly easy if someone were to bump them, especially on carpeted floors where the soft footing aids in the possibility.

They have two 6" woofers, a mid range, and a tweeter, where as the next Sony model down does not have a mid range speaker. The mid range sounds are clear, and the tweeters have a strong output. These 4 speakers combined in the tower like cabinet, produce a pretty darn good sound! I was shocked, because I paid twice as much for my Infinity speakers, 20 years ago, and the sound form these was at the very least comparable, and in some ways better. The Bass from the Sony’s far exceeds the bass from the Infinity’s.

I have them connected to my Sony STRDE-975 Surround receiver, and they make a good marriage. The receiver has so many different sound modes, and these only accentuate them.

These are AWESOME. I thought I was getting an average speaker from what I paid, but to my surprise, they blew me away. The design is attractive, the height allows you to hear better when sitting or standing. Highs, lows, & mids, all come out clean & sharp. Using fiber optic cables for digital sound, you won't believe the sound that comes out of these, and you won't believe you paid less than $200.00 for the pair!

For those who want great sound that usually only comes from higher end, more expensive speakers, then you should give these a listen. I believe that you'll have a hard time finding better, or even equivalent speakers in this price range.
