This receiver is pretty heavy, it was the mid market receiver for Sony and it won quite a few awards. Most notably with Home CIname Choice.
Setup.
Read the manual until you understand it - not simple but well worth doing, setting speaker levels, delay times and if large or small.

Stereo music is good but not as good as a proper 2 channel amp or a more expensive H/C setup.
It can go very loud, I am driving very high quality speakers (see my Castle review) and I can deafen myself if required.
The receiver is not out of its depth with decent speakers either, some amps of this price will struggle.
Compared to other home cinema receivers I have heard it is very good. more
This will be tidied up when I next play with it!
I have owned this receiver for nearly 5 years, it was nearly £500. I got £25 off.
Basic details, 100 watts RMS per channel, 5 channels, on board Dolby Digital up to 5.1, DTS and Dolby Prologic.

Very good for the market position, Dolby Digital sound tracks are processed very well with little noise and good precision, steering is good, the sound is neutral, not bright nor wooden.

My DVD player does not do DTS, so is untested by me
Prologic support is there I do not know if it is good for prologic as I have heard very little beyond DPL TVs (a nono I think), but it adds more depth to TV programmes
Connections
Coax and Optical for DVD TV, Optical in for TV, Optical In/Out for Minidisc or DAT.
Stereo in for TV, DVD, MD or DAT, tape, and 2 VCRs, extra VCR in on front panel. Stereo out for 2 VCRs, MD/DAT, tape, second system.
Phono Level in for record decks. 5.1 out for seperate amplifiers, 5.1 in for SACD or DVD-A.
Video switching is enabled for TV, DVD, and all 3 VCR.
Speaker connections for a full 5.1 system are there as are a second set for front stereo pair, these are decent connections capable of handling thick cable, or biwiring.
Connections which would be nice would have been a second set of 5.1 in.
Remote - to be done
The volume knob light does not work.
I would recommend one of these as a second hand buy up to £200 over spending that much on a new amp.
A real quality system, you could pay 3 times the price for similar sounds, make sure you use this product with a full complement of speakers, you really do not want to miss a thing, I hardley use the radio functions, as mine is hooked up directly to a freeview box and I tend to listen too the radio that way, but the build in tuner works well enough, bring DVD's to life with full suround, its the only way to watch and hear your favorite films, works ... ...to all your CD's as well. Connects also to you old VCR, but they generally have much poorer sound, and this quality system will bring out the best sound you could hope to get with VCR's but don't expect miricles.
I hope this review is useful to you, this is an excellent sound system, well worth consideration to any sound perfectionist. ...
