I have used several Sony VAIO TX5MN/W's in the workplace and I must say that I found them more than satisfactory. I like Sony products in general - especially the intuitive design and style of them and this product has both in buket-loads.
The X-Black widescreen display is tiny at a mere 11" which, while excellent in quality, makes it hard to work at for an extended period of time. In keeping with the miniscule theme, the keyboard is ultra-compact (which sometimes makes typing a little clumsier than a full sized keyboard would provide). On the other hand, the small features allow this to be a truly ultraportable, stylish machine. The touchpad is of a decent size but the buttons are awkwardly placed making an external mouse a good idea. The battery life for the TX5MN/W is amazing - around 7 hours in practice. However, to acheive this there is nothing amazing about the internal specification. With an Intel Core Solo U1400/1.2GHz and 1GB of DDRII RAM there's enough to run day-to-day tasks in Vista but anything more can cause quite a slowdown. The internal DVD±RW can bring the battery life down by an hour or so if it's in constant use but otherwise isn't a problem.
The main flaw I found with using this laptop was the low number of ports provided. The mere 2 USB ports meant that nothing much else could be used alongside my external mouse and flash drive. Also, the speakers are only mediocre which is nothing less than I'd expect from a laptop.
The other major drawback for this is the whopping £1,500 price tag. I'm quite sure that at least £300 of this is the VAIO badge. That's the biggest flaw I can find in Sony laptops and I detest it. I have only even seen one of these because of my job but I'm pretty sure that otherwise it would've flown right under my radar.
In conclusion, this laptop is much more than just a fashion accessory. It has the quality and size to be your favourite companion in the office (provided you have an external monitor) or on the road and be the envy of the meetings room.
