Sony VAIO Bluetooth Laser Mouse VGP-BMS33 - mouse

...be honest, when is a Sony Vaio designed product never stylish? So i exchanged my yen equivalent of £30 and in return received something that I didn't really need, but found use for if I did own it.

There are two things that makes this mouse different with most other mice out there; Firstly, its design, and secondly the fact that it uses bluetooth instead of radio.

...inside it already. I think Sony were aware that this mouse is marketed towards users who already own either a bluetooth dongle or have a computer with bluetooth capabilities already. You do get a wealth of instruction manuals (albeit in Japanese, but i'm sure if you bought it in europe you'd get westernised languages) and 2x AA batteries.

I got this just before Christmas last year (2006) as I was on a trip in Japan, and thought that it looked amazing. Well, to be honest, when is a Sony Vaio designed product never stylish? So i exchanged my yen equivalent of £30 and in return received something that I didn't really need, but found use for if I did own it.

There are two things that makes this mouse different with most other mice out there; Firstly, its design, and secondly the fact that it uses bluetooth instead of radio.

Upon opening the packaging, I was rather disappointed to find that there wasn't a bluetooth dongle included. Thankfully, my Vaio has a bluetooth chip inside it already. I think Sony were aware that this mouse is marketed towards users who already own either a bluetooth dongle or have a computer with bluetooth capabilities already. You do get a wealth of instruction manuals (albeit in Japanese, but i'm sure if you bought it in europe you'd get westernised languages) and 2x AA batteries.

Inserting the batteries was rather easy, although the battery cover is attatched to the mouse with a plastic strip so some care is needed to not yank it off completely.

Flick the on switch and a red beam wakes up and you can tell the mouse is ready to be used. (Don't forget to flick it off after use!)

Can't use it yet though as you need to add it to the computer as a device. Existing bluetooth software will find the mouse with ease, and you can add it with ease. Just like any other bluetooth device. However, what i've not been able to do (yet) is pair it, which means every time i want to use the mouse, i have to re-add it as a device. It can be rather annoying at times when you want to use it straight away.

Once added, you get prompted to click "OK" with the mouse to make sure its working fine. Do this and thats it, mouse is ready to be used.

The optics used by the mouse is 800dpi laser, which is about standard with most mice, and in use is responsive, as i'd expect it to be really. On my table though, it did feel smooth and seemed to glide effortlessly. In the hand, it felt of decent Sony build quality, and the battery lasts for quite a while, i've had to change it only twice since i've had it, and i use it for about 3 or 4 hours a day.

So in conclusion, if you already have a bluetooth ready laptop and would like something thats unique to match your Vaio like no other, this mouse will do its job just fine. If you don't really need it, there's no point in getting one really!
