Although they both carry the Centrino badge, Sony’s latest VAIO couldn’t be more different from the Toshiba Portégé R100. While the latter dumps every scrap of ballast in its bid for ultra-light status, the Z1SP weighs in at a portly 2.15kg. The Sony Z1 RMP bettered it's predecessor the 'Z1-MP' by increasing the CPU speed from 1.3 to 1.5 Ghz, and by putting in an extra 20Gb of Harddrive. The Z1 is very easy to use with tactile mousepad and quiet, firm keyboard. A large palmrest also aids longer periods of typing. The setup of the machine is made all the more easier with logical icons at all the connection points, and automatic recognition of peripherals. The whole Z series notebooks from Sony have been extremely positive. I used to be solely an IBM man when it came to laptops believing that they were the only tier one supplier. Dell was to unstable and deterioated in performance very quickly and compaq/hp notebooks never met the quality of their desktops and servers. Toshiba was perhaps the closest match but in recent years toshiba laptops have declined. I bought my Sony Laptop in September after doing some thorough research. It was the best product I could find at the time, and is almost flawless. It has a hard disk of 60Gb, a 1.7Ghz processer, 512Mb Ram, CD-RW, Bluetooth and Wireless LAN. It comes fully loaded. The Bluetooth is great, because it means I can pair my mobile with my laptop and back up all my numbers, syncronise my schedule onto my mobile, even send text messages from my computer via my mobile!
