It could have been so much better..
Advantages: It's a Sony :-) Disadvantages: rubbish headphones, even worse software......
...the latest version from the Sony website, it will save you a lot of trouble.
However, once I had the new software installed, I came across another problem. You can't just drag and drop with this thing, you have to use Sony's "sonicstage software" and that's just crap. No other way to describe it really, rubbish. You have to set up play lists, and folders and import them and then export them to the player, and it took me ... ...quality.. well, it's a Sony so no problems there, it has a little built in EQ that you can use the presets or set your own although as I use it in the car, I run it "flat" and use the car audios controls for extra bass etc.
Techy stuff here:
Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery up to 28 hours playback (never tested this)
High speed battery charge: 3 minutes charging will give you 3 hours playback ... more
This is a very mixed review, in that I really want to give this little MP3 player a glowing review, 5 stars and all that but I can't. It is quite simply let down VERY badly by its software, more on that later…
So, to start with I chose the 512 model as it fitted into my price range that I was prepared to spend (read - that's all the money I had) I bought it and took it home and tried to open the package. Right.. Thanks Sony, one of them blister packs that you actually do need a sharp knife to open. I don't have sharp knives in my computer room, so I though a screwdriver would do. It won't, and I have the scars to prove it.
So, after walking down to the kitchen for a knife I was able to extract the thing from its cage. First impressions were mixed as well, lovely looking thing… Silver and shiny, but where is the display? Where is the battery compartment, where is the battery! Sony, what have you done?
Erm.. RTFM (Read the F***ing manual) Yes indeed, I then find the display is hidden beneath that shiny surface and glows blue through it when you switch it on. Also, its battery is internal as it charges from the USB socket, meaning you never have to buy batteries for it. (major brownie points there)
It's a small little thing and I imagine very easy to lose, but the cost of replacing it means that I am very careful with it and tend to keep it in a little case I bought for another old player a while back. Now the headphones. White headphones. If I wanted white headphones I would have bought an ipod. Straight onto eBay with them, as I don't need them. I bought this thing for the car as we don't have a CD player and I also bought a little radio transmitter cable that I simply plug into the 12v supply, attach the lead into the headphone socket and tune the radio to 107.5 and off I go.
But that's digressing a bit. Anyway, I assumed that all I had to do was plug the unit into a USB socket for it to charge, let windows "see" it and then drag my files across and that would be it.
Wrong. With a capital Wrong. First off, yes its starts charging fine (nice display seen for the first time but once it had charged, then the fun began. First off following the instructions to the letter had my PC crashing as soon as I plugged the thing in again, after messing around for a while I decided that maybe there was an update or patch so headed over to Sony's website to find out.
And there was.
If you buy one of these, don't even try to set it up with the software supplied, go and get the latest version from the Sony website, it will save you a lot of trouble.
However, once I had the new software installed, I came across another problem. You can't just drag and drop with this thing, you have to use Sony's "sonicstage software" and that's just crap. No other way to describe it really, rubbish. You have to set up play lists, and folders and import them and then export them to the player, and it took me some time to work out how to get it to send the tracks I wanted and not what it thought I wanted (turn off that annoying "auto" feature)
Anyway, after a while |I finally had it doing what I wanted, even if it is slow transferring the files across. Another major drawback is that if I was at a friends house, and he had some music I wanted, unless he had the same software installed, I could not load it onto the player… get real Sony, lose this stupid format and you might sell more players.
Sound quality.. well, it's a Sony so no problems there, it has a little built in EQ that you can use the presets or set your own although as I use it in the car, I run it "flat" and use the car audios controls for extra bass etc.
Techy stuff here:
Lithium-Ion rechargeable battery up to 28 hours playback (never tested this) High speed battery charge: 3 minutes charging will give you 3 hours playback time Transfer up to 22 CD's onto the internal memory thanks to ATRAC3plus compression technology (or not, as the case may be) Direct USB plug for ease of use Bright and clear 1-line OLED display for easy navigation Multiple codec support: ATRAC, MP3 and WMA compatible SonicStage 3.4 software for easy music management and transfers of your favourite tracks (don't use it!! Go get version 4 or later) Dimensions: Width (mm) 24.6, Height (mm) 79.0, Depth (mm) 13.6
It also has a clock.. why I don't know but it has one, it also has an extensive little menu section for setting up play lists, audio settings, display settings and more and takes a bit of time to get used to as there are only a few buttons to navigate with.
So, over all I give this a better than average rating, I can't fault the player as it is well made, good sound quality and has great features. However, the software leaves an awful lot to be desired, and if you are in any way a technophobe I would avoid this like the plague as it will have you tearing your hair out. So, to sum up, excellent player, rubbish software.
Advantages: good looking Disadvantages: no fm radio , sometimes all your music can be deleted
The sony walkman nwe002 Is a really good mp3 player as it is really good looking and beautiful as the screen is hidden which is a really clever thing done by sony . The looks The looks are really good and the screen is hidden . It is a really good looking mp3 player . It is quite small and slim and is available in pink siver and black i chose the black as i am a boy but the pink one is aimed for girls . The front of the mp3 player is not crammed ... ...which is something only sony music players have . If you buy a stero system with a usb which cost quite a lot you cannot play it on the actual streo system or through its speakers unless it is a sony player . The samething happend to me i recieved a streo system for my birthday . My parents paid extra for the usb slot and my mp3 player could not play into that streao systam as it was not sony which really annoyed me and is quite impractical if you ...

Advantages: Small, Light Weight, Good Sound quality Disadvantages: Nothing to fix it to your person ! Terrible supplied PC software
...As you would expect from Sony the sound quality is rather good with quite an emphasis on the lower bass region and little distortion when pushed. Albeit after the first day I binned the supplied mediocre earphones and purchased some new Sennheisers. My only gripe would be a slight lack of power, but considering the weight and size of the unit, is understandable.
The E002 is finished to a high standard and the semi opaque screen that is only visble ... ...some new 'phones though.
For those who are more frequent listeners to music on the go I would suggest spending a bit more money and until the software is rewritten I would almost certainly avoid anything from the Sony camp and perhaps jump on the chic Ipod bandwagon ! ...

Advantages: Small neat appearance Disadvantages: No lanyard or waist clip supplied
...would treat myself to this sony for just going to the gym.
Firstly it's size is only 3" long and barely an inch wide.
It has a very shiney attractive finish and once figuring out how to work all the buttons I found it quite easy to operate.
The player has a small led display panel but I would say you need really good eyesight to read it as it's tiny.
Player is charged through PC using usb connection. A full charge takes 60mins and the led display ... ...a sports timer.
The Sony software isn't the best I've used but after playing around with it I found the easiest way for me was to make up playlists, name them and transfer automatically.
The earphones are OK and are a neat fit but I've had much better supplied earphones.
Sound quality is very good for the price but I would have to say the Ipod Shuffle has the edge on the Sony NW-E002 for sound only.
Overall ,I would recommend this player. The ...

Advantages: Good battery, not bad value Disadvantages: Software not good; no clip; the headphones!! ARGH
...This is one of those Sony MP3 players that will not allow you to use any of your own software to transfer music onto it. This, in itself is annoying because I have all my songs nicely stored on my media player, which is nice and easy to use - and I am familiar with it. The software that comes with this device is completely different, has crashed a few times, takes ages to run & generally ticks me off! When you start it up you have to select the device ... ...the drive that your mp3 player is plugged into. It then loads up the songs already on the player and for some reason mine always asks 'Are you sure you want to start automatic transfer?' I think what? I have not pressed anything to imply I did! At least you can say no, then select the songs from the left hand panel one by one to transfer. This can be time consuming and you cannot tell immediately whether each transfer will work. You can import new ...
