I bought this for £65 from a rip-off store in central London. At the time you could get them for just over £50, now at that price you could probably get a lot more memory. I had to bargain down from £80 on the one I bought, convinced that the retail price was much higher. Naturally, I was not happy with it when I discovered the truth. However, having decided there was no point travelling back to return it (the train fare alone would cost me the difference in buying it elsewhere) I decided to open it, and found that it's actually not that bad. OK, it's good.
Appearance-wise, it is reasonably small. Mine is the deep purple (box says violet) colour and is fairly stylish in its own way. The screen is too small to fit the details of what you are listening to on and the words move along too slowly, but it lights up nicely in blue. Unfortunately it does not have a clip, so when travelling it is left loose in my pocket. If you are worried about losing it, consider using zip pockets
for some safety.
It has 2 different play modes. All the songs can be played in order, or 20 randomly selected songs. The positioning of the buttons is awkward. The hold slide is on the opposite side to the play/stop button. It can be difficult to switch the hold on or off without stopping or starting your player. This really defeats the object of a 'hold' button - especially if you do not notice when the 'play' button has been pressed. A couple of times already I have found the MP3 player to have been left on with the battery almost run down.
Whilst you can now get players with far more than 512mb, consider how long you need to play it for at a time, how many songs you will need to put on it and whether you really need to spend more money on more memory. I've managed to cram in most of my favourite songs and of course if you get bored of them you can always chop and change. On the other hand, if you like to have a huge variety of music, because, say, your mood changes quickly, this will not be near enough for you. The battery is good. It lasts several hours and is very easy to charge - just stick it into the USB port of a laptop - before you know it, it's done. It is good not having to lug around another charger in your suitcase when you go away! I have not noticed, in the last couple of years I have had it, any decrease in the amount of usage time I have between charges. I'd admit that as I no longer travel to Uni, I do not really use it for very long periods of time, and charging is so easy I barely notice how often I do it, but I'm still sure that the battery holds out well. It's just a shame that there is little indication for when the battery does start to run low, so I have been caught off-guard a few times.
The headphones are a huge disappointment. For a start they are way too big to fit the ears and keep falling out. They are also very uncomfortable, so you will probably need to get some covers for them to stop them scratching the ears or triggering ear wax. The sound quality is poor (update - after a month since this review was originally written, I have noticed you cannot hear a thing from these when you are out or travelling - they are in fact completely useless) yet gives out a lot of environmental noise pollution and since they barely hang on the ears so are not really in-ear phones the volume has to be kept high to be worth using, which is no good on buses, trains etc. as external noise is overpowering & it causes offence to other passengers. On the upside, the wires are somewhat easier to detangle - but other than that they are useless. I have since bought a new pair of earphones.
This is one of those Sony MP3 players that will not allow you to use any of your own software to transfer music onto it. This, in itself is annoying because I have all my songs nicely stored on my media player, which is nice and easy to use - and I am familiar with it. The software that comes with this device is completely different, has crashed a few times, takes ages to run & generally ticks me off! When you start it up you have to select the device you want to transfer music to, obviously this will be the drive that your mp3 player is plugged into. It then loads up the songs already on the player and for some reason mine always asks 'Are you sure you want to start automatic transfer?' I think what? I have not pressed anything to imply I did! At least you can say no, then select the songs from the left hand panel one by one to transfer. This can be time consuming and you cannot tell immediately whether each transfer will work. You can import new songs on your computer onto this list. I do not recommend importing all audio files automatically as all sounds will also be imported making the list ridiculously long. You can also use the software as a music player but again I would not recommend it, personally I am quite happy with the player I had before.
