"Sony at their best ...."

The phone when off

The phone when off

I've been using a rather nifty little phone over the passed few months, mainly due to my old one taking a dive out of a high window, so I was in desperate need of a new phone, quick, and this one was there with a good offer.
The phone I am writing about it this one, the Sony Xperia Z2.
Yes, I know it's not the most up to date Xperia but for what it does, and the way it does it, I can say that I have been so happy whilst using this so far, (touch wood and all that).

So what does this one look like …?

It's a bit of a whopper, compared to some phones, having a 5.8 inch screen which is edge to edge, (sort of). 145Mm long 72mm wide and no more 8mm thick.

There are three hard buttons, those being the power button, the volume and the dedicated camera key, all being on the right side as you look at the screen. Also on this side there is the microSD card port, which is covered with a water tight cover.
On the other side there is the SIM port, which also hold the connector for the power cable, this too has a water tight cover.
The rear there's the main camera (20.7MP) which has 8x digital zoom and a lot more to offer. There's a flashlight below this.
The top there is the 3.5mm earphone port, together with a small hole that is one of the two microphones.
On the front there is the screen itself, the proximity sensor and the front camera, (2.2MP),and that's it.
The ear piece and mouth piece are cleverly hidden on the face edges of the front, with the ear piece being right at the top and the mouth piece being right at the bottom. Also hidden on the bottom edge are the speakers.

What does it offer...?

It runs 4.4.4 Kitkat, which can be a bit of a pain when it comes to SD card storage but there are ways, and apps, to get around all that. With it being Android it runs the same sort of programs/apps, which means that if you've used one smart phone you know what you're doing. There is word that there is an upgrade to lollipop 5.0 in the near future but the Kitkat is good enough anyway.
It houses a quad-core 2.3 GHz cpu and a Adreno 330 cpu for graphics. It may not be the best for gaming but I don't tend to play games on it anyway.
you do need a microsim for this one but if you have a standard sim and need to get one most networks should send you the correct sim so you don't have to change your number. (I know orange do).
It offers 3GB RAM and 16GB of internal memory, which is not too bad, but as you can add a Micro SD card, (up to 128GB), there's plenty of room really.
The cameras are pretty good too, giving you many options once the camera app is open, options such as manual setting, automatic, sound photo, (which gives sounds to you pictures?), face in, (puts you face in a circle in a picture), Live on Youtube, (explains itself really), and even some fun ones such as 'AR fun' and 'AR effects' (add strange things to what you see through the lens..??) There are many more features with the camera, with many more to download too.
The image quality is great, and you can set your own options too, which means you have full control over the picture.
The dedicated camera button on the side of the phone, below the volume button, makes taking a picture really easy, almost like using the shutter key on a proper camera. plus, you can set this camera so that the shutter sound does not alert that bloke who fell head first into the bin whilst walking down the street, that you've just taken his picture and are about to put it on youtube, (using the 'Live on youtube' setting)

What about the battery …?

The battery is built in, which means that there is not way to take it out. A bit like the iphone.
It takes about thirty to forty minutes to charge fully, and then lasts about as long as any other smart phone, depending on what you're doing with it. If, like me, you use it for the interweb daily, opening other apps whilst doing so, taking calls, texting and the like, then it will need charging daily. But I do get a good seven hours out of it with constant use, which is pretty good really.
If you go into the setting, then to 'power' management', you can set the phone to give it a better battery life, 'stamina mode'. There's also a large bit at the top that gives you a rough idea of how long you have left with the battery, if you're using it or if it's in stand-by... this is a rather useful little battery management section and is well worth looking at.

Is it fast …?

The phone itself is as fast, if not faster that any other smart phone I have used.
The screen is responsive, moving from one to another when I want it to, not when it chooses, and opening up different apps is a breeze. There's no delay during the move over, although I have turned the animations off so that the next screen comes up without any fancy transition.
The responsive screen makes writing such things as text, e-mails, even notes and things so quick as the in built keyboard is the right size so that my fat fingers don't keep pressing the wreong keyz...

There are many useful apps already installed on the phone, and many more to download from the app store, but the useful ones from Sony xperia are the the 'update centre', which keeps an eye out for the latest software updates so you're always up to date. 'Walkman' which makes it easier to sort out your music tracks. Then there's 'xperia lounge' which gives you the latest 'stuff' about all things Sony, and more.
There's also a couple of cracking apps pre-installed, those being 'TrackID' and Track ID TV'... with these you simply conenct to the internet then, if you want to know the name of a music track, (Track ID) or a tv show (Track ID TV) you simply open the app, then press the big button on the app, let the microphones pick up the track or show and, usually, within seconds, the title of thee track/show is shown on the screen.... this comes in really handy indeed.

There are many more apps out there, some on this phone, others waiting to go on it.... but that is all down to a personal preference.

What about reception …?

The call quality is excellent. Although that does depend on where you are, who you're speaking to and what network/phone they are on. But up to now I have had no problem being heard and hearing others, with no dodgy echoing or static... I did have to get used to placing the top edge of the phone near my ear as the earpiece is hidden on the top edge, not like other phones where it is just down from the top edge. But that took all of ten seconds to get used to.
The internet again is down to what you have, be that wireless of 3G/4G
For me, as this is on EE it comes with 4G, which is faster than I thought it was going to be. A lot faster than slow-mo-3G... so there's no waiting about for pages to load. And as the phone responds quickly I am able to browse online at some speed.

What do I think …?

The phone is brilliant, without a doubt.
The feel of it is firm, if a little 'bricky?' with straight edges and ever so slightly curved corners. The hard buttons on the side are well made and feel as though they are going to last quite a few presses, with the glass being that extra toughened type. Although it will break if whacked hard enough. Also, it claims to be waterproof, but i'm not willing to test that as yet so I can't say either way. But the seals around the two covers seem to fit snugly enough.

The phone itself is easy to use, and is quick to respond, as quick as any other phone i've used, even those that have cost the price of a second hand mini cooper.
The screen is crystal clear, giving sharp pictures, and the speaker give out a good quality sound too. Then there's the ear phones that came in the box, giving you the option of noise cancellation, which, once th ebuds are in your ears and the setting on the phone is turned on, you can forget that the world outside exists as all you can hear is the sweet sound of your music.
The touch controls act instantly, even whilst wearing gloves, (although you have to activate that setting as it is turned off on default).
The rear panel is as smooth as silk and I do recommend buying some sort of case for it as it can slip easily out of your hand, as I found out. Luckily, I caught it before it went any where

Are their any downsides …?

The only thing I find negative about this phone, which is not really the phone, it is actually the OS kitkat. This being that I can not directly control the external mirco sd card properly. What I mean by that is that if I open, say, a picture and want to delete it I get a message saying that the phone does not allow changing the SD card 'Failed! Android 4.4 don't allow non-stock app to modify the external SD card.....
But, as I said, it is not the phone, it is the OS.... luckily there is an update to lollipop (5.0) due soon which should rectify this problem... although, to go around this I simply use a different app to modify the external card, that being either ES file explorer or even the build in file commander...

So, really, the phone does not have a downside, although kitkat does...

What is the price tag then …?

It is a cracking phone for the money, about £200 - £250, or contracts around £20 a month, depending. And is well worth looking at.

Would I recommend this …?

Yes. Without a doubt.
This is one of, if not the best, mid range cost smart phones out there. If you can get this on a contract at a reasonable price, with a decent package of 4G, then go for it as this phone will not let you down and will help you keep up with your 'twittering' and facebooking'..???
Even for the price tag, it is still well worth buying as it is a lot better than many phones of similar, and higher, price....
