Sophie the Giraffe is a classic children's toys that has been around for years and years. I remember my cousins having one about 20 years ago when they were babies and I loved it when I used to baby sit them and I remember thinking I would get one for my babies when they were born and thats exactly what I did when I had my little boy.
As the name would suggest, Sophie is a giraffe, a cute little giraffe with brown colouring and a smiley face. Sophie is actually a French baby toy, having been invented there in 1961 and apparently, according to an article I read, "These days in France 9 out of 10 newborn babies are given their own Sophie La Girafe." Not bad for a simple baby toy.
Sophie is actually designed to be a teething toy and you can tell that my little boy really appreciates this at the moment as his teeth are starting to come through and he is just gnawing away at Sophie all the time. Sophie is made of quite a plyable rubber and is very squishy and flexible which makes her perfect to be able to chew. In fact, according to an article I read, Sophie is made from 100% natural rubber derived from the sap of the Hevea tree. Sophie has four slim legs and then on the top of her head she has two ears and also two little horns as well. Its these raised sections that are apparently meant to be really nice for teething gums as they sort of massage the gums and can touch the gums in different areas to massage them and hopefully make them better for little ones.
Sophie is about seven inches tall so she's not that big but perfect for little hands to hold. She is quite slim in her body too so I think this makes her a nice little toy to hold onto and its quite easy for me to slip her in my hand bag and be a toy that we can take out with us as well. The fun part of Sophie is that she squeaks when you squeeze her anywhere on her body, that baby toy squeak and my little girl loves to do this to entertain her brother with. The markings on her are cute and like I've said above she is brown, she has brown hooves, ears and horns and then she has lots of brown dots on her that give her her unique giraffe markings.
You can buy Sophie in lots of different places, baby stores, the internet etc and she costs in the £10 region which in my opinion is a perfect price for a classic toy.
