== SOREEN FRUITY MALT LOAF ==
Many, many years ago in the dim and distant past that was known as the 1950's, my mum thought that I needed building up (oh I wish!!!!). Well at least I think that was the reason, unfortunately she's not around to ask now, but for whatever reason, she would purchase a large brown jar from the chemist, in this jar was a delicious, sweet sticky substance called malt - and everyday I had to have a spoonful ... ...myself a slice of delicious Soreen Malt Loaf.
Again Soreen is a name from my childhood, we always had it as a treat on a Sunday spread with a rather naughty amount of 'best' butter ( why was it best butter - was there any other sort!!)
It is actually just fifty years since that soft, gooey delicacy was first introduced to this lucky nation, and the product is still going strong.

I can still taste it now, it was lovely, and I still taste it on the odd occasion that I allow myself a slice of delicious Soreen Malt Loaf. Again Soreen is a name from my childhood, we always had it as a treat on a Sunday spread with a rather naughty amount of 'best' butter ( why was it best butter - was there any other sort!!) So what exactly is a Soreen Malt Loaf? Soreen is a fruity malt loaf, still made in Manchester where it began, the company used to be run by a family whose surname was Sorensen - and so the brand name Soreen. Soreen is dark, sticky, fruity, sweet 'bread', it has a chewy texture, made from malt and contains raisins. It is usually eaten sliced and with butter, although it is also very popular with a slice of good Cheddar cheese.
Soreen Malt Loaf can be found in the bakery section of all supermarkets. It comes in a distinctive yellow pack, with a picture of grapes on the name Soreen in large letters and it is proud to tell you that it is low fat. In most supermarkets you will have the choice of the regular unsliced Soreen (which comes in a heat sealed pack) or ready sliced Soreen which comes in a plastic bay ( loaf style). For this review I am giving details about the Soreen that we have just devoured, which was the unsliced variety.
On opening the packet you get a sort of brick shaped loaf, 7.5 " long and 3" wide, dark brown in colour it is soft and 'squishy'. I sliced the loaf into 8 slices - which were quite thick - almost 1" a slice. The main problem I find with malt loaf is the slicing, it does go all misshaped as you slice it due to the soft, sticky consistency, but it does regain it's shape after a few seconds. I know that you can buy it ready sliced - but to be honest I prefer the unsliced, I have found that the sliced dries out quicker, the slices are hard to separate and I like to cut the loaf to my own prefered width.
The smell is unique, and initially not actually that pleasant, rather like a stale beer taste (a combination I presume of the yeast and malt) for the manufacturers, then you are hit with the undeniable smell of ripe, juicy raisins, and things begin to look up. But the taste is delicious, sweet, rich and malty even more delicious with a really thick good butter!! Moist, sticky and sweet the consistency adds a lot to the inimitable flavour of Soreen. (It is so soft and sticky that I have known messy kids to make it into balls as it is that malleable) The hardish outer skin soon gives way to the soft middle with really juicy raisins.
But is Soreen a 'naughty but nice' product. Soreen now promote their malt loaves as energy boosters, nutritious, and low fat.
Well I'll let you determine if a slice of Soreen will fit into your eating programme - as I said I cut mine into 8 slices (you could cut it thinner with a good knife) each of these slices contains 86 calories, 0.33g saturated fats , a whopping 18.2g carbohydrates and 0.7g fibre. Yes it's low fat but if you load it with butter it defeats the object completely.
Soreen is suitable for vegetarians and for home freezing and comes with the normal warning that it is manufactured in a bakery that also makes products containing walnuts.
With regards to storage, if you don't eat it all at once (IF) Soreen recommend that you keep the remaining loaf in a dry cool place and eat within 2 days of opening, if you freeze it, it will last for three months.
To give you a little comparison price wise I will base my prices on Asda - as of 21/9/09 Soreen regular is available at 56p a loaf or two for £1, Soreen sliced is 85p a loaf, Weight Watchers ( not recommended by me) is 84p and the Asda Smart Price is 28p ( I would recommend paying the extra - there is a difference in taste and the Smart Price variety contains 10% raisins compared to 14% in Soreen).
There are all sorts of ways of using Soreen apart from with butter and cheese, the company do have a wonderful website (http://www.soreen.com/index.html) that has lots of recipes on as well as different facts about the product - you can also send in your own recipe. Perhaps I'll send in mine, if I don't I'll jot it down here for you.

Slice a Soreen loaf thinly and spread liberally with butter or margarine. Arrange the slices in a greased oven proof dish. ...dark Prince’s own satanic food, Soreen malt loaf that’s what.
Here are my findings:
~~~~~~WHAT IS SOREEN MALT LOAF?~~~~~~
Soreen malt loaf is basically a small sweet loaf of bread baked with a plethora of raisins, it is heavy and very dense. The sort of thing you could throw to the ducks in the park pond and then watch them sink.
Some of you might even remember the cheeseball advert that actually shows you what it is with the slogan ‘Shhh! Doreen’s ... ...middle. The red and white Soreen badge is smeared across the front and we are treated to the wonderful vision of two large purple bunches of grapes staring gleefully out of the pack, I can barely contain my enthusiasm.
On the back is all of the usual crap, ingredients and such and we are given a serving suggestion on the side of the packet (More on that later).
~~~~~~TASTE, LOOK AND SMELL~~~~~~
Ok, first things first, when you open the packet ...

Advantages: It's relatively low in calories, and fat if you eat 1/10 of it... Disadvantages: The encourage you to smother it with butter - not low in calories or fat!
...see? The advertising department at Soreen must be dead proud of that one!
INTRO
Anyway, onto Soreen itself. Soreen is actual a malt loaf in a wrapper (more later), with which you can do what you like.(Although eating it is the recommended action.) Soreen themselves describe their creation, as a "delicious, sticky cake that's low in fat. You can eat it sliced and buttered or simply on it's own." So not only is there a description, but also a handy ... ...once you butter it...
Soreen make a point of saying that this is suitable for vegetarians, so get it in!
PACKAGING
The malt loaf itself is encased in a bright yellow plastic film wrapper. The wrapper itself is easy to open, but at the same time protects all that malty goodness. And also, as with most packaging - it does exactly what it says on the tin - or wrapper. Detailed on the packaging is what it is, as well as the handy aforementioned serving ...

Advantages: Nice taste. Nice price. Disadvantages: I don't like the work Soreen!
...an ex member (Deano76) on Soreen Fruity Malt Loaf. He hated it, and had no problems in telling us! Since reading that review I'd forgotten all about it. But recently I was shopping in Tesco (at 6:30am!), and spotted Soreen on a Buy One Get One Free offer. So I threw a couple of these smallish loaves into my shopping trolly.
I paid £0.79p for a 'large' loaf. I can't see no weight on the packaging which would give you a rough idea. The loaf comes ... ...mainly bright yellow with the Soreen name in big lettering with 2 bunches of purple grapes on the front. On the back are the ingredients, nutritional information and contact details.
Per 100g there is 2.0g of fat and 1315kj/310kcal. It states to eat within 2 days of opening.
This fruity malt loaf is suitable for vegetarians and is suitable for home freezing. And it is 97% fat free.
Right, now the most important bit, the fruit loaf in question. ...

Advantages: Delicious; lo fat; keeps well in a lunch box without crumbling. Disadvantages: So tasty you'll devour the whole loaf.
...as moist.
The damage:
Soreen very kindly split the cals etc into a tenth of a loaf piece (so times it by 3 or 4 or 5!!) One tenth of a loaf contains 82kcals; 2.0g protein, 17.5g carbohydrate and 0.4g fat. Okay, so you're probably better off eating a handful of raisins, but it's worth it!
Verdict:
If you've not tried it... go get some!
If you have, you'll no doubt join the fan club too!

...like it. I prefer my soreen as it is.
History.
The company has been around since the late 80s (although it seems a lot longer) and was run by a family called Sorensen – hence the name soreen. They are based in Manchester, which is my home town so it makes it even better. They have introduced many varieties through the years and currently offer original malt loaf, ready sliced, a snack version, a plum fruit loaf, a apple and cinnamon one and go ... ...They have a website for soreen addicts – www.soreen.com, which gives details of news and competitions and recipes that have one of the soreen products in for example baked apple and banana cheesecake that uses the apple and cinnamon loaf or salmon cakes with herb dips that uses the sliced malt loaf – I haven’t tried any of the recipes so I can’t tell you what they are like I’m afraid.. You can also use the freephone number for, comments, feedback ...

aisle, but who needs biscuits when you can have soreen! Paid for my items, dashed home, didn't even put the shopping away before i had opened the bag to pull out a slice of soreen! I couldn't resist, or even wait for that matter! It wasn't a bad decision to make either! However, i did need two slices to fill 'naughty' section in my stomach! Or maybe it was an excuse because the maltloaf was so tasty!
So what is it?!
It is a fruitymaltloaf which comes pre sliced in squares with visible raisins! It is made up of wheat flour, water, raisins, starch, sugar syrup, malt flour, malt extract, dried whey, vegetable oils, colour caramel, yeast and salt. I don't care what's in it as long as its morish that's good enough for me!
Nutrition
Yes it is true, it is 97% fat free! whoopee! It contains 103 calories and 0.7g fat per 33g slice ...
Advantages: No advantages over the budget malt loaf to be honest Disadvantages: Too expensive, Packaging is bad, Taste is not great
Let me start by saying that this maltloaf really wasn't worth the 72p I paid for it, When I could of gone to Asda and brought the exact same product for 20p, as its cheaper because its Asda Brand maltloaf. This product alos isn't worth it because of thier choice of design on thier packaging. I think this is possibly where the hefty price comes from as I never see many people buying it. Now on to the price comparison as I know this will help alot of people when thier buying the ever so wonderful MaltLoaf =) lol At Tesco, They don't appear to sell this exact maltloaf, but what they do sell is 'SOREEN SLICED FRUITYMALTLOAF' which is priced at 98p as is the same for Sainsburys, Morrisons and Asda. This is a tad more expensive than 72p and I have yet to test it, so bear with me lol. The 'OL BUDGET MALTLOAF' At its current price of 20p ...
Advantages: Delicious, chewy and low in calories Disadvantages: Expensive
To me, maltloaf has always meant the Soreenfruity variety. My mum used to put little sandwiches in my lunchbox made out of the original Soreen. But there was always the same problem: the darn thing was so dense and its exterior so rubbery that the loaf would be squashed flat before the knife could pierce it. Then you would have to do your best to re-shape each mangled slice by hand, or else break your teeth on its compacted density.
It took a surprisingly long time for Soreen to cotton on to the idea of a sliced loaf. Now that the cutting problem has been ironed out and the Sliced and Easy variety is the standard, I am confident in awarding Soreen's product five stars. (Unfortunately the slicing also means that it is even harder to resist the urge for a slice or two. Don't expect a loaf of this to last long.)
The sliced version ...
