I've been reading Shaun Hutson books for a while now I still haven't read them all but I intend to. I love his style of writing and his descriptiveness and the humour of some of the situations if wonderful. Some of the plot's are bizarre to say the least but I think that's what appeals to me.

I've been reading Shaun Hutson books for a while now I still haven't read them all but I intend to. I love his style of writing and his descriptiveness and the humour of some of the situations if wonderful. Some of the plot's are bizarre to say the least but I think that's what appeals to me.
Our nutter Pierce has had a hard life his dad's gone his mum's on the game and he's seen things most children shouldn't have. Straight into the horror at page 10 not a bad start. For some reason though it took me a few attempts to get into this book perhaps it the nature of the first big scene that put me off but I don't want to give too much away. You only get a brief glimpse into Harold Pierce's childhood but it's a gory one.Needless to say he's suffered and now after years of living in a mental institute he has to face the big wild world. It gets worse there is another nutter facing the big wild world but this time he was supposed to stay where he was for life. It's got a nice twist at the very end but to be honest I did laugh when I found out what all the fuss was about but I think thats just my sense of humour.
It has a great way of keeping you reading as has all of his books that I've read have. The way he leaves you on a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter then won't mention it for the next couple of chapters as he is keeping you up to speed with the other part's of the story. I know that's the way of most books but he does seem to have the balance right. He also pays excellent attention to detail. However it was pradictable in parts and had all the typical horrific deaths you expect as well as the cliched good guy saves tries to save the day and leave the woman in the car always best to keep em where you can see them in this kind of horror they're only going to get themselves in some kind of trouble.
This certainly wasn't my favourite book of Shaun Hutson's I've read so far but it wasn't a bad book I did quite like the ending it was quite touching in a very wrong kind of way. It has everything yu want in a classic horror novel: A mystery, love (sometimes misguided but it's there), violence (naturally) and a nice little twist to keep you guessing.
I don't regret reading this book it was good in a horror sense just realy not one of Shaun's best ones. A good time filler if your not too fussy.
Advantages: A nice read Disadvantages: None of note
been a fan of ShaunHutson from his very early books like slugs and Spawn and I thought I had read all that he had to offer. Imagine my delight therefore when I discovered Hybrid lurking on the pages of Amazon.co.uk and the realisation that I had not actually read it. Hybrid is a very clever piece of writing from Hutson in that it contains a story within a story, I sometimes forgot I was reading about a struggling author so engrossing was the story about Sean Doyle and his Counter Terrorist work, I actually found myself caring far more for Doyle?s character than for that of Christopher Ward. The first two thirds of the book are largely taken up with the story within the story but then as the manuscript is finished it switches to the author and his struggles to find out how and why the story was being written. Hutson himself says in his ...

Stephen King's claim to fame ; Superb atmosphere ; Sublime plot ; A vivid imagination that stretches all supernatural boundaries ; Probably responsible for some of the best horror films of the 70's and 80's
Some unessesary background in the first half ; Kubrik mucked up the story too much ; Could have been much more (*)
A nice gripping and readable novel ; A terrific tale of survival ; Very atmospheric ; The characters thoughts and feelings are projected well to the reader
Suddenly stops flowing towards the middle ; King can be slightly over obsequious towards the main character (*)
