I have owned my Spear and Jackson fork now for about two years and it is still going strong. I bought it from Tesco Direct, ordered it online using my vouchers and it arrived very quicky within three days as it was in stock (last two left so they must have been popular). It cost about £27 and I have been really pleased with it.
I do own a number of Spear and Jackson garden tools and I know they are very good quality so I was expecting the same from this, and I am pleased to say I was not disappointed.
It has what is called a wishbone handle, because it is shaped in the fashion of a wishbone. To me, this makes for easier handling and it has a good grip which allows me to do some serious digging with a good bit of force, especially in my back garden where the soil is heavy and full of rock. You need a good quality digging tool for hard ground and one you know isn't going to break or buckle on you.
The shaft of the fork is also made of wood, as is the handle, but it is not in two seperate bits - it is the same piece of wood throughout, which obviously makes the tool a lot stronger and durable than if it had been in two seperate parts. The shaft is made of hardened wood which also adds to the durability.
The actual head has four tines (or forks) and these are very robust and strong and made of stainless steel. because they are made of stainless steel there is less chance of the soil sticking to the tines and it makes it very easy to shake off wet hard soil off after use and between digs.
All in all a great digging tool which I have been very impressed with and I would greatly recomend.
