Mortgage Express - a waste of space
Advantages: A freephone telephone number, good incentives such as free valuations Disadvantages: Poor customer service
I am a Mortgage Broker who offers mortgages from the Whole of the Market. I must admit that 2 years ago, Mortgage Express were highly competetive with their rates and offers, but more recently, I never seem to source them when it comes to finding my clients mortgages. Overall found their service slow and at times I found that they changed their lending criteria to suit themselves at times, meaning when I recommended a mortgage to a customer, I then ... ...obviously reflected badly on me.
They offer a freephone number which is rare these days, however, you have to be prepared to hold on the line for a good 35 minutes in order to speak to somebody. This somebody may not be very understandable either and may not have a clue what you are talking about! ...

First Active Mortgages
Advantages: Excellent Interest Rate Disadvantages: Poor correspondence
...took out a mortgage with First Active in October 2005, I used an independant mortgage advisor and they returned the best results. The fees were £300 for a level 2 Property Inspection and £95 start-up fee. The interest rate is guaranteed for 2 years to be 0.05 above the base rate, obviously its a variable rate.
I would say the overall package offered by First Active was good on paper but they struggled to match this with their customer service. For ... ...and the mortgage pack was nicely laid out in a folder and easy to read. The best advice I could give is that I recomment First Active but you should really keep on top of them by phoning them frequently to ensure they're doing everything they need to. ...

FirstPlus Homeowner Loans
Advantages: Very easy to speak to Disadvantages: Loan secured on your home
My husband and I applied for our FirstPlus Loan through Moneysupermarket.com. Staggeringly with all our credit and store cards and our car loan it worked out that we owed £52,000!!! We were paying £1200 a month on this, FirstPlus has now got that down to £400 a month. We can finally start living again. FirstPlus made it so simple. I fill out a form on Moneysupermarket.com and then a FirstPlus advisor rung me back. She then went through a few details ... ...this, which she said is the hardest bit over with and then put me through to Mike, my Account Manager. Mike was really helpful and went through everything that we owed, how much we earnt and how much equity we had in our house. He also went through the insurance really thoroughly.
My paperwork arrived the next day with all the forms that we had to sign and complete. The good thing about this loan is that you have to provide FirstPlus with the names ...

Mortgages, Mortgages & Mortgages
Advantages: Not many unless you like parting with ££££ Disadvantages: Loads of errors, poor communication
...just terminated our Mortgage with Mortgages Plc at the end of our one year fixed deal.
We had to go down the route of self certification as my partner had a job which paid heavily on commission, making it difficult for a high street lender to give us anything more than 65% loan to value. We went through a broker and he came up with a deal through Advantage Home Loans, a sub company of Mortgages PLC. The deal itself was OK, we had expected a higher ... ...be paying per month from Mortgages Plc, the quote seemed fine, we could afford it and it set out their charges which they informed us could be added to our final loan amount.
We completed the rather ardous application form, which took us 3 days to work through and despite it being true self cert (they make no checks on your income), the were not happy with the application until we had given employer details and kept sending it back until we had ...
