Speedball was based on a violent futuristic cyberpunk sport which had elements of ice hockey and american football and give points to violent play aswell as scoring goals! Nice. You are given the task ... ...division, Brutal Deluxe. You control one player at a time, eg if you run with the ball and then pass, your control goes onto the receiver, so in theory you control the whole team but only one player at a time.

Speedball was based on a violent futuristic cyberpunk sport which had elements of ice hockey and american football and give points to violent play aswell as scoring goals! Nice. You are given the task as playing as a new team in the speedball second division, Brutal Deluxe. You control one player at a time, eg if you run with the ball and then pass, your control goes onto the receiver, so in theory you control the whole team but only one player at a time.
You are surrounded in an arean similar to a five a side cage and allowed to basically do anything you want, the more violent the better, but the overall aim was to score more points than the oppo. Each team had 9 players (Speedball 1 had 5) and points could be gained by scoring goals past the goalkeeper, wiping people out and throwing the ball at different bonus point areas of the arena. Each game lasted for 3 minutes and you could play through a season, a tournament or practice mode.
Each player had their own stats and look, basically they all looked like Rhys from Terminator 1, a little battered and bruised but ready to do a job. You could transfer people in and out of your team improve your chances but you always had issues with injuries!
The better i got at this game, the more i liked it (suppose thats with any game!!) but it was a struggle to begin with. Once i worked out a game plan and weak points of the opposition, i regularly scored enough points to win the game. Causing injuries to others gave me so much enjoyment, dont worry im over it now though!!
Graphics were alright for its time, there was alot of metal looking stuff involved so a lot of silver and greyish colours, sound was alright aswell, again a lot of crushing and sounds of pain which could easily be repeated within the game. Multiplayer was ok, it only allowed you to have a one on one game, exhibition style, and for 3 minutes a game it was over pretty quickly.
However, i didnt play it long enough to find out how tough it could get. Other games got released around the same time and this one got put to the back of the cupboard. memories were good though and if i could id love to play it again.
Since its release its gone on to have several popular sequels each improving along the way. Live the dream.
