If you haven't got green fingers but fancy a plant or two in the office or home try Chlorophytum better known as spider plant. This plant is very forgiving and will tolerate just about anything you can throw at it except frost .
They are ideal for begiiners or non enthusiasts but are a little limited in their appeal . The whitish flowers are almost insignificant and it is grown essentially for it's foliage. There is a suggestion that these plants help to purify the air that we breathe a little too -making them ideal for offices.
Spider plants will tolerate temperatures as low as 7C but not much lower.
The common variety that most people posses is " variegatum " . Even non gardeners will know this plant. The leaves are variegated but it is possible to but an all green variety.
The other thing they don't like apart from the cold is overwatering . This is the cause of the brown streaks that sometimes appear in the middle of some of the leaves. They will tolerate weeks of drought before they start to show signs of neglect . I have rather unforgivably neglected mine shamefully over the years by forgetting to water them and not repotting them on , but they refuse to die. I can comfortably say a well developed speciman will survive three weeks in average temperatures without water .So if you go for a long holiday and can't be bothered getting a friend to water the plants whilst you are away then this plant is for you !
Propogation is essentially by two methods Division and by repotting the little plantlets or mini spiders that frequently appear and they root very easily. Simply detach a plantlet and place in a three inch pot of compost . Sometimes they may need pegging down in postion for a week or two but not always.
To divide the plant simply break up the clump and pot on individually . If you take the plant out of it's pot you will see that the "one " plant is in fact made up of several . This is ideal done in Spring.
As I've said they are not a fussy plant . Provide light , don't overwater and avoid frosty conditions and that's about it really.
Spider plants originate from South Africa hence the dislike of frost.

I like this plant but got rid of mine as they were supposed to be bad Feng Shui with their spikey leaves!

Memories of the biology labs...planting pots of spider plants, only to see them all grow amongst the already well grown ones. :)

good opinion - when I wrote mine I could not remember the proper anme of it for the life of me :) No worries. Yes, I'm into the environment and self sufficiency. So much that, in an upstairs flat with a tiny balcony, I've started grapefruit and pear trees from fruit pips. Oh, and bought a cute garden bench which is in the living room at the mo ...
