Spirited Away tells the story of 10-year-old Chihiro, a girl in the midst of a move to the suburbs who wanders into a strange town and finds a world of spirits ruled over by the mysterious Yubaba. Into the boiler room! Chihiro encounters the old arachnoid Kamaji and his bizarre army of soot balls who keep the hot water running. Chihiro tries to help but she's not really suited for this kind of work. When Lin the slug girl comes to deliver lunch, though, Kamaji tells her to take Chihiro with her. Lin introduces Chihiro to the bizarre bath house wonderland where she works, and to her boss, the giant-size matriarch Yubaba. After a demonstration of her powers, Yubaba renames Chihiro "Sen," and puts her to work. Sen goes through a gruelling first day of scrubbing floors and being made fun of by the other workers for being human, but she forges on. In the middle of the day, while everyone's asleep, she sneaks outside to meet Haku...
Advantages: Well drawn characters Disadvantages: Not enough action
...of the characters at some points and put the book down at the end thinking about where they're going to go next and how their lives will go on.
This, I think, is the true beauty of "Spirit Gate". It is an opening in quite a long series, so it doesn't want to give too many secrets away, but it's masterfully done to leave you wanting more. If Elliott didn't have the gift for characterisation that she does, this would have been an incredibly boring read, but as long and as slow paced as it was from the start, I'm eager to read more. Elliott has shown us the gate and I'm left wondering what lies on the other side.
This lack of secrets does mean that if you like this sort of thing, it's a book to be bought rather than borrowed, as you may need to check back in future parts of the series, should you get that far. The Amazon price of £6.39 is a little too...

The book begins be introducing us to 2 main characters, January Birdlip and Freddie freud. They run a book publishing firm. But with the cities being mostly empty and the human race scattered amongst the planets exactly who they sell to is a mystery.
In this story there is a distinctive difference between Robots and Romen.
But the difference was still unclear at the end of the story.
It caused quite a bit of confusion over the initial 20 pages.
Freddie likes to whip his roman with a whip over his desk which of course has no effect on the metal body what so ever.
With a start to a book like this I was worried it did not bode well for the rest of the book.
There follows some...
