You cannot shop IN shops with this card. It is made for shopping online. It is very easy to use, and very easy to shop with.
●HOW TO GET ONE●
To get a Splash Plastic card, you need to go to the website, which is www.splashplastic.com. On the homepage, there are lots of different things. At the left hand side of the screen, there is the navigation menu for the website which has:
Home Get A Card Activate Card Top Up Card Where To Shop Special Offers My Account Help! About The Card
Also, at the top of the homepage, there is the Log-In section, and the right hand side of the homepage advertises 3-4 places where the Splash Plastic Card can be used. But you don’t need to bother with these sections yet.
You will need to click on ‘Get A Card’ on the navigation menu at the left hand side of the homepage.
The next page you see after clicking on the ‘Get A Card’ link, is the first part of the sign-up. This is just the usual information which most companies need. These are:
First/Second Names Sex DOB Address Town/City County Postcode E-mail Is This Your First Card
You will need to fill in all the information asked above. After you have filled in the info, there is a small box underneath which asks you if you would like a free unpersonalised Splash Plastic card. Tick the box if you do not want your name on the card. (Having your name on the card will cost about £1.99)
After doing all this, click continue at the bottom of the page.
UNPERSONALISED CARD: If you chose to have a free unpersonalised card (if you clicked the box underneath your personal details), then the next page you will see, is one giving you the choice of confirming you want an unpersonalised card, or if you want to change to a personalised one. If you click ‘Confirm’, then you will get a message on the screen telling you that your card will be with you in 10 working days. You are now done ordering your card.
But if you change your mind (before clicking confirm) and want a personalised one, then when you will have to click on ‘Change’. (See below for what to do after clicking ‘Change’).
PERSONALISED CARD: If you never ticked the box underneath your personal details, or you did tick the box and have clicked on ‘Change’, then your next page will now be a page where you choose how your name will appear on your card.
When you have chosen how your name will appear on your card, click ‘Continue’.
On the next page, you will be given 2 choices on how to pay for the personalised card. The first choice is to ‘Pay Later’. This means that when you activate your card and top it up for the first time, then the price of £1.99 will be taken from the amount you put on the card.
The second choice is to ‘Pay Now’. This is only if you have already got a Splash Plastic card. You will need to enter your card number and your password. This one will cost only 99p.
After choosing your method of pay, you will now get the message to let you know your card will be with you within 10 working days.
●WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU RECEIVE THE CARD●
When you receive your card, you will not be able to top-up and shop straight away. First, you will need to go back onto www.splashplastic.com and click on ‘Activate Card’ on the navigation menu at the left hand side of the homepage.
When you have gone onto the website and clicked n the ‘Activate Card’ link, the first step is to choose the design of your card.
There are 6 different designs, but you cannot choose your design beforehand, which I think you should be able to.
When you have clicked on the design which is on your card, you will be sent to the next page. On this page, you will need to fill in the 16 digit number on the front of the card, and then enter the ‘Activation Code’ which will be sent with your card. Click next.
You will now need to create a password for yourself. Once you have created your password, you are done activating your card.
●WHAT TO DO NEXT●
The next thing to do before you can shop is to top up your card. On the website, you can click on the ‘Top Up Card’ link on the navigation menu. The next page is the ‘Shop Locator’ page. What you will need to do is put type in either a Shop Name, Town or City or Postcode. When you have done this, you will be given a list of shops and post offices in your Town or City, where you can top up your Splash Plastic card.
You will now need to go to the shop of your choice in your area to top up your card. The minimum amount you can put onto your card is £10.
You can also transfer money from your bank account straight onto your card . You will need to go to ‘Help’ on the website and search ‘Topping Up’. This will give you information on how much you can top up, and will you a link to the bank transfer form to have money put onto your card from your bank account. This is a one off payment to your bank account, and the least you can top up with this method is £5. The transfer is made once a month and you choose how much will be put onto your card every month. The most amount of money you can put onto your card in one go is £500. This is for both methods of topping up.
●WHERE TO SHOP●
After activating and topping up your card, you are now ready to shop. There are quite a few places to shop, but not a wide choice. To find out where to shop, you can click on the ‘Where To Shop’ link on the navigation menu on the splash plastic website.
The products you can buy are:
Music & Video PC’s & Electronics Games Clothes & Fashion Mobile Phones Sport & Hobby Gifts & Cards Books and Posters
On the ‘Where To Shop’ page, you can click on any of the products above, and a list of website will come up. Click on the link, and the website will open up in a new window.
It is very easy to buy with the card. When you choose the item you want to buy, all the websites will give you a choice of paying with your bank card or Splash Plastic card. All you need to do is click on the Splash Plastic card choice, enter in your card number and password, and your payment is done. As simple as that.
There are always special offers for some shops. The ones that are on at the moment are:
Get a free keyring when you visit www.therockmatrix.co.uk and spend £10 or more with your Splash Plastic card.
Register at Thorntons and you will be entered into a competition to win a £36 Cascade.
There is always ‘Special Offers’ like this on the Splash Plastic website.
●SECURITY●
All card transactions are secure. The electronic payment system makes sure that all your transactions are updated instantly, so spending is entirely under your control. The topping up ina shop method is just like topping up your phone with a swipe card. Atahe money will go staright onto your card within 5 minutes. You can keep track of all your purchases by checking your online account.
You always need to keep your password secure/secret. If someone who knows your password gets hold of your card, they will be able to log in as you and shop with your card. If your card does go missing, then you can go to the help page on the Splash Plastic website to get the address for the ‘stolen cards’ department. They will close your account and cancel your card immediately, and send you a brand new one for free.
If any other problems arise with your card, such as your money has not gone onto it, you can contact Splash Plastic through the ‘Help’ page and they will sort the problem out.
●WHAT ARE THE DESIGNS OF THE CARD●
There are 6 designs in total.
The designs of the cards are very simple. 4 of the designs are a liquid type of look. There is an orange one, light blue one, dark blue one and a silver one. The design is only the bottom half of the card. The top half of the card is white.
The other 2 designs are:
An orange ‘Splash Plastic’ symbol in the centre of the card. An orange ‘Splash’ sign, sort of like a splodge like when you throw paint. This is also orange and is at the top left of the card.
They are not horrible designs, they are actually quite nice, but I think that you should be able to choose your design, but you can’t.
●DOES THE CARD COST ANYTHING●
Like I mentioned earlier in the HOW TO GET section of my review, if you want an unpersonalised one (without your name on it), then it is totally free.
If you want a personalised one and it is your first card, then it will cost you £1.99. If you have already got a Splash Plastic card, and you are applying for another one, then it wil only cost you 99p.
●WHAT DO I THINK●
I think that a Splash Plastic card is a very good thing to have. Here are my reasons:
● It is very cheap to get one – or free. ● Very secure ● Easy to use ● You will never get into debt ● There is always special offers on certain website where your card can be used
It is also very good to get your teenager. I wouldn’t say kids, but possibly 12-13 upwards. You could put money on for them, say once a month, and they can go online and get something they want. It also makes young teenager feel like they are grown up by having one of these, because it is just like having a credit card, except you will NEVER be in debt by it.
Also, at least you know where their spending money is going – on something good except for rubbish like sweets, etc.
I would recommend this card to everybody. It’s a good way to shop! The website is very helpful and explains everything you need to know about the card. Once again, the website is www.splashplastic.com.
Also, for more information, you can contact the Business Partners on mediainfo@splashplastic.com
Thank you for reading and I hope it was useful for most, if not, all of you.
Advantages: You'll never get into debt Disadvantages: Limited use of sites
Splash Plastic
I don’t like debt. Nobody does it’s true, but I have a real phobia about getting into debt. Hence, I have no credit cards. I cannot purchase anything online without using another persons card and giving them the money. All very inconvenient. That is until someone told me about splash plastic.
What is it?
Basically, it’s like a credit card, only you pre-pay (as you would with a pay as you go mobile phone) and then ... ...of other sites who accept splash plastic. It’s just a matter of shopping as you normally would and then clicking the splash plastic payment option when you’re done.
How many sites can I shop at?
Ok, it is limited but some the biggies are there and there are more being added all the time. The full list is as follows:
Joe Browns
Barry’s World
CDWow Bloomsbury Bright Skies
Attitude Clothing
101 CD
Buy Handmade Jewellery

Advantages: good if you pay off your balance every month Disadvantages: but does everybody do that?
MBNA was the first credit card that I got when I started working as a teacher. I thought I was a big cheese, and I was immediately given a credit limit of £1500 (this was in 1994). Over the years the card has had its uses, but there are a number of alarming issues that I feel should be pointed out to members of the general public before they sign up and splash the plastic:
1- Interest Rate - MBNA does not have the most expensive, but then again it does not have the lowest interest rate.
2- Minimum Payment - The minimum payment on MBNA cards is only 2% of the outstanding balance. You may feel that that is irrelevant to you, but if you are one of the millions of folk who do not pay their balances off in full, there can be a few problems down the line. MBNA are happy to up your credit limit from time to time. Before I got rid of it ...
Advantages: Discounts on Virgin products, smart looking. Disadvantages: More suitable for now and again use than regular shopping sprees due to transaction fees.
Prepaid Credit cards are a fairly new concept to the UK market, though a quick Google search will show that there are now several providers offering these cards. I wanted a card for online shopping but didn't want a traditional card that would get me into all sorts of financial trouble.
The Virgin Money Prepaid Mastercard is provided by 360 Money - the same people behind SplashPlastic, I got mine online via the Virgin Money website. At present this is the only way to obtain a card.
I completed the simple registration online and paid with my regular debit card on October 1st and the £9.95 set-up fee was collected the same day, shortly afterwards I received an Email to let me know that my order had been processed and that they would send another when the card was on the way.

***** UPDATE ADDED AT THE BOTTOM *****
360Money, for those of you who may not know, is the replacement for SplashPlastic cards. While the card does say "SplashPlastic" on it -- it's really called 360Money now.
This card is what you could call a "prepaid debit card" but there is NO bank account attached to the card. It's like a mobile/cell phone where-by you can only spend what you have topped up onto the card. For example, if I topped up £50 then I could only spend £50.
However there are charges involved. With the old SplashPlastic card, you only paid to apply for the card and then that was it but with this card you pay differently.
There are actually three types of cards;
- A Pay As You Go card
- A Pay Monthly card
- A Premium Card
~ Pay As You Go ~
This card costs £6.99p to apply then £6.99p annually plus £0 ...
