It was one of those hazy thuresday afternoons, sitting in my school's library, surfin the web and then one of my pals comes up to me and shows me a credit card he got...of course it was splash plastic.
What IS Splash Plastic? ------------------------ Splash plastic is a UK pre-pay credit card, aimed to be used by teenagers (due to the 18 year old age restriction usually in effect for professional cards). This card is one that you order off the splash plastic web-site (address to be stated later) and after filling in your details, will be sent to your address. When it arrive you will be told to go back to the web page and activate your card. From then on you're ready to fill up your card...
So how DO you fill up your card? --------------------------------- Aha, the people at splash plastic have teamed up with Pay-Point and Pay Zone to bring you the flexability of either going to any store, super-market, corner shop, anywhere there is a Pay Point system (as advertised on TV, usually for TV and Gas Bill payment) and allowing you to pay the cashier the amount you want to put on your card and this amount will be transfered to your account. The web-site will even locate all the shops nearest to you that supply this service (I found over 300 in Edinburgh). Now there is also a service that lets you transfer directly from your bank account but this is quite hard to find on the web-site (this may be due to costs for this service to them), I was only lucky to find it. Oh and dont worry about your money, it is secure in a Bank of Scotland Vault, locked away from all those evil people in the world :-).
Where can I USE this card and what LIMITATIONS are --------------------------------------------------- there? ------- Well, heres the low part of it. The Splash Plastic Card can ONLY be used online and it can ONLY be used in a certain number of shops (only about 65 online stores) but these include places such as Blockbuster.co.uk, Jungle.co.uk, Gadgetshop.com, Attitude Clothing, CD WOW, Game Xchange, UMBRO.com and many more. You can even buy web space for your web-site if you really want.
A further limitation is that this card cannot be used to purchase games, videos, DVDs etc. with an age restriction of over 12, no matter what your age. I know its stupid but they state that it is because there is no sure way to collaborate the age information from Splash Plastic.com to the retailer site...or some jargon like that. Basically, if your into 15s and 18s dont bother, you won't be able to buy any. I was very annoyed at the time but have learnt to live with it. I now use it to buy gadgets and clothes instead that dont require these ratings. So it aint so bad.
Any more info I should know about? ----------------------------------- Not really, I have found their service to be very efficient and their look at security very professional. I have had no problems with purchasing things (apart from age restricted movies etc.) and a bonus is that you get SUPERB offers on products and services by using this card. (I once got 75% off my purchases from a website by using the card!) Oh I nearly forgot, this card and its services are COMPLETELY FREE!!! NO APR, nothing!
Overall... ----------- Well, although it is disappointing to have such a limit to the number of shops that it can be used in this number WILL increase in the near future. The age restriction is a down side. But overall I'd give it a 7/10. I WOULD recommend this to the average teenager, but adults you wouldn't get so much from it unless you like gadgets in which case its worth it (its FREE! and yes im 99% sure you adults can get one too!) and you get all those lovely special offers!!!
You must be a UK resident to get one.
You can get your card from: -- http://www.splashplastic.com --
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
There's another card similar to this - Smartcreds (www.smartcreds.co.uk) - it works in the same way, and anyone of any age can get one, but you can register proof of your age so you're not limited on age restricted goods. Karen :O)

Interesting concept and one that would be interesting if it took off - something like this may help under 18's to spend more wisely when they get older.

i think i will wait for more shops before i think about getting one
Advantages: Discounts on Virgin products, smart looking. Disadvantages: More suitable for now and again use than regular shopping sprees due to transaction fees.
