Splash Plastic
I don’t like debt. Nobody does it’s true, but I have a real phobia about getting into debt. Hence, I have no credit cards. I cannot purchase anything online without using another persons card and giving them the money. All very inconvenient. That is until someone told me about splash plastic.
What is it?
Basically, it’s like a credit card, only you pre-pay (as you would with a pay as you go mobile phone) and then you can spend online. If you haven’t got a credit card, for whatever reason, then this is a brilliant concept. It’s available to anyone, under 14’s have to have parental consent though.
How do I get it?
Go to www.splashplastic.com and click ‘Get a Card’. Fill in your details and the card will be with you in 5 to 7 days. Mine came 3 days after it was ordered. You simply go to the website and follow the instructions to activate your card.
How do I top up?
There is a very handy store locator on the web site. Type in your postcode or town and the site will give you a list of shops and post offices to top up at. Easy. You can put up to £500 on the card and as with mobiles there is a £5 minimum amount.
How do I spend?
The site has a list of other sites who accept splash plastic. It’s just a matter of shopping as you normally would and then clicking the splash plastic payment option when you’re done.

Ok, it is limited but some the biggies are there and there are more being added all the time. The full list is as follows:

How secure is it?
Very. The electronic payment system means that your account is updated instantly so spending more than you have on your card isn’t a worry.
Any Incentives?
Plenty. There is a special offers section where splash plastic card holders get discount on a range of goods. These change from week to week so it’s a good idea to keep checking in. I saved loads of money on my Christmas shopping.
How easy is the web site to navigate?
Very easy indeed. It is well laid out with clear, concise instructions on how to use all the facilities on the site. It includes all the information you need plus details of contact telephone numbers and addresses.
How much is it going to cost me?
Absolutely nothing. There are no charges at all. None. Nil. Zero.....
So, that’s Splash Plastic in a nutshell. If you have a bad credit rating, for whatever reason or if you’re like me and you just don’t like credit cards, this is a really good way to shop online.

Advantages: Discounts on Virgin products, smart looking. Disadvantages: More suitable for now and again use than regular shopping sprees due to transaction fees.
